I don’t watch tv, so I haven’t seen this stadium before. These photographs are incredible, with so such dynamic perspectives. The combination of architecture and theses images creates a visual that makes me feel like I’m looking at a living creature as opposed to an building. Lovely!

The tones in the black and white are perfect. I like the blue sky in the last one. I suppose there’s no perfect time of day on a sunny day but this would be close, leaving the blown out part up in the far balcony. Very nice angle too. I probably would have shot it straight on but this looks better. Did you notice the roof looks like an American football? :)

Congratulations to everyone concerned – the designers – the builders – and to those who run it and fill it with enthusiastic sportspeople – surely South Africa will win the right to host the Olympics now that they have shown what they can do.

A lot of people here in England sing the praises of the majestic arch that suspends the roof at Wembley Stadium, but I think this looks more impressive. Great shots for a great venue for a great occasion. Well done photographer and S. Africa.

Mt. Rainier In All Her Glory” by Journey

Positively postcard worthy! It has everything that the quintessential mountain photo should have: wispy low hanging clouds, brilliant blue sky, green trees in the foreground and of course a rugged mountain.

“Mount Rainier Old School” by neens

Is it really just a picture of a postcard? Or did the photographer digitally manipulate into looking like it’s an old school photo postcard? I don’t know, but I like that the photo makes me ponder such things. Also it’s great that the photographer thought “outside of the box” and instead of just shooting a static photo of mountains they maybe took it a step further.

“On the Way to Hurricane Ridge” by April Lagrow

I like the muted color palette of this photo. Sure it’s grayish but the mountains and sky usually are gray so capturing them that way absolutely works and the lack of brilliant colors by no mean diminishes the beauty of the photo.

“Sign From Above” by Jerry Mercogliano

Nice composition with the light streaming into the middle of the frame also the scene makes for a very dramatic black and white photo. The whole shot is just very crisp with nice contrast and beautifully stacked layers (the layers being:the trees, the water, the mountains and the clouds) throughout the frame.

No ? like the iPod Touch, but in contrast to the iPhone (and iPod Nano), the iPad lacks a camera. (This may be better for high-security environments and in some other circumstances, and it's one less expense in Apple's bill of materials ….. No, with three exceptions: Photos, Videos and YouTube all work with external displays too. Will Keynote work with Keynote Remote on an iPhone or iPod Touch? No, we haven't been able to make it work. Can I add my own themes to Keynote …

Miley Cyrus may be 17 years old — older than Britney Spears was when she released “…Baby One More Time” — but we still can't help but think of her as an 11-year-old on the Disney Channel in a goofy blonde wig. It's no wonder that her new sexed-up image for “Can't Be Tamed” is stirring up a little bit of controversy.

In 2008, Cyrus was criticized for baring her back on the cover of Vanity
Fair. Now, she's wearing cleavage-baring corsets and grinding with
dancers in videos, pretending to make out with girls on stage, and she
was even busted dirty-dancing with her “The Last Song” director Adam
Shankman. Her back should have been the least of anyone's worries.

On May 14, Cyrus wrapped filming on the final season of “Hannah Montana.” The season will air starting on July 11.

Perhaps Miley should've waited until after her Disney reign was over before busting out songs with lyrics like “I go through guys like money flying out their hands.”

Miley tells
the AP that she doesn't intend to push the envelope too far. “I'm not
trying to be slutty,” she says. “I'm not trying to be like, go to the
club and get a bunch of guys.” Miley is still dating her “The Last Song”
co-star, 20-year-old Liam Hemsworth.

“What I'm trying to do is to make a point with my record and look
consistent, in the way my record sounds and the way I dress,” Miley
says. “When you're 11, the word you would use to describe someone is
definitely
not sexy, and as you get older I think you grow into that. And I think
I've done that but that's not my schtick.”

Her new image may have
caused a few people to forget that she is still under age. Gossip
blogger Perez Hilton recently tweeted a photograph shot up
Miley's dress, taken while she was climbing out of a car. Hilton insists
that she was wearing underwear.

It's definitely arguable that
MIley has been forgoing wearing pants in videos and performances, so a
photo of her underwear-clad crotch didn't show us any more than we've
seen before. The key difference is the intent. Taking a photo up a
woman's dress is a violation — especially if the woman is a girl
of 17 years. It was clearly intended to incite scandal and embarrass
her.

The photographer and Perez Hilton were both crossing a
line, despite a recently released video in which a playful Perez says
“The reason I linked to that photo is because I thought she was exiting
that car in a very unladylike fashion, and you know I like to encourage
Miley to be ladylike.”

Don't expect Miley to put on pants any
time soon. “I'm really comfortable with my body,” she says. “I feel more

comfortable dressing with a little less, which is just how I've always
been. Now I'm able to do that a little more freely and, also, I've
just grown up to be this way too.”

It's great that you're
comfortable with your body, Miley… just give the world a little time
to catch up, please!

European Beach Soccer League by www.manuelqueimadelos.com

Tim Wiese Fussball Trikot

One of the most controversial decisions relating to 2010 FIFA Cup (June 11 - July 11 in South Africa) is relating to its implementation of goal-line technology. Critics are calling this the dumbest decision in soccer refereeing technology, as it would have allowed a goal to accurately be determined as a goal instantaneously by computerized chips. Proponents of the rule hail this decision as instrumental in keeping soccer a human-oriented sport not focused or inclusive of any type of technology. Nonetheless, 90% of voters in a FIFPro poll stated that they would like to see the implementation of accurate goal-line technology in soccer.

The very few supporters of this ruling (1 in 10 soccer fans, as well as FIFA executives) favor pure human interaction in the game with absolutely no technological interference whatsoever. This would be a great platform to stand on, by declaring that sports should be human-only. However, what proponents do not realize is that this technology does not intrude on the game at all. A device is placed on the goal, which would then give the answer of whether or not the goal was made. Put simply: there is no intrusion, simply answers.

So, why is FIFA denying instrumental technology? The answer is fear. The FIFA executives are afraid that technology is going to take over everything, even soccer. They are afraid things are going to end up like Terminator: first it starts with the goal-line, and next thing you know the robots are going to take over the world and not let us play soccer! What was going through their heads?

What FIFA also fails to realize is that everything being used in soccer is technology. The soccer ball being kicked is a piece of technology. The goal being kicked into, was once thought of and invented as a piece of technology. The white chalk used to define the goal-box is technology. Anything made by humans is technology. So why are they allowed? Because they aid in a better, more fair and fun game. Hence, goal-line technology will soon be implemented in other leagues, whether or not the dull witted FIFA committee will sooner or later.

Fans understand that there is no intrusion in the game, yet the people like FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke saying “Technology should not enter the game. We should trust and keep football as a human game” does not help the sport idealize. Instead, what we have is a fear to accept new and better ideas. The world changes, life changes, the universe changes, and soccer is no exception.

“We've been talking about having dreams about this,” Hatz said. “And then you're actually in it, and you're just, like, 'Oh my gosh.' It's so exciting.”

Catholic's first championship came in the team's fifth trip to the state final four. Ben Timson has been at the helm for all of those trips and has coached Catholic since its soccer program started in 1998. He said that, some years, the Lady Irish felt fortunate just to get to the final four.

But, last year, when Catholic made the final four, the Lady Irish believed they had what it took to win a championship. A 2-0 semifinal loss to Trinity derailed that dream.

“Everyone's been thinking about it since that loss,” Catholic senior Ronnie Renner said of the championship. “Since the day we lost, everyone's been wanting to come back here. We prepared this entire year for this, and to finally get it is just unreal.”

It may have felt that way. But the first soccer championship for Springfield was as real as the trophy Catholic hoisted and the celebratory ice bath players gave Timson after the game.

“Sometimes you wonder if it's ever going to happen and then, man, then it does,” Timson said. “And it's just an unbelievable feeling. I'm so proud of these girls.”

Desktop replacements are especially popular this time of year. Students are receiving their acceptance letters to college and parents are beginning to get them stocked up on their materials, and that includes notebooks. I have my hands on the 17″ HP Pavilion DV9810US which since it has a display larger than 15″ is considered by most a desktop replacement. I'm going to let you know how well it performs and who will likely be pleased with this notebook.

Hardware:

Imaging: A 1 megapixel integrated webcam (producing an image comparable to that of a cellular phone's)

Processor: 64-bit 2.0 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 dual-core

Storage Space: 160 GB hard drive

RAM: 3GB RAM (expandable all the way to a 4 GB maximum)

Optical drive: a CD R/RW with integrated dual-layer DVD +/- buring drive

Graphics Accelerator: Nvidia GeForce Go 7150M graphics (using up to a total of 1071MB of available video memory)

Dimensions: 15.1″ x 11.2″ x 1.6″ and weighs 7.7lbs.

This notebook is fairly powerful which is to be expected from a large desktop replacement. Thanks to the high end hardware the battery life has lasted up to 2.5 hours for me. This is a little better than average for a desktop replacement notebook. So if hard pressed I wouldn't mind taking this on a plane ride or trip, although your legs may fall asleep under the 7.7 pounds of weight. The 3GB of RAM is adequate and allows for Windows Vista to run flawlessly. The storage space on the other hand seems a little light with only 160GBs. If you're really looking for a desktop replacement I would find something with more space.

Connectivity:

Integrated wireless

1 Ethernet port (so that this notebook can connect to wired networks)

4 2.0 USB ports (these are the gold standard of computer connections, to be used to connect digital cameras, printers, and mp3 players)

1 FireWire port (this is used for high speed data transfer between another PC or digital camcorder)

1 S-Video output (designed to be used to connect to projectors or compatible televisions)

1 VGA output (this is a typical monitor connection)

1 ExpressCard Slot (this slot allows for the addition of peripherals like a Bluetooth adapter or cellular modem)

2 audio out / 1 mic in

5 in 1 memory card reader (this is used to directly insert solid state memory from mobile devices into this notebook)

1 56K modem (so that this notebook can dial up to the Internet)

To really have an excellent example of a desktop replacement notebook I would really look for something that has TV tuner and HDMI output. This notebook has neither of these unfortunately. It does however have a great processor and a decent video card meaning it will run smoothly, do plenty of work and play a few games. If you want to watch movies on it as is, you'll have to get used to watching them on the 17″ screen. As far as price this notebook comes in at an average online price of $894. This is a decent price for this notebook and I don't expect and drastic price drops in the near future, so if this notebook sounds like everything you need I wouldn't bother hesitating to pull the trigger.

A Beast of A Burden

Man, Erin’s gonna love this new HP notebook PC. Now I just have to find the right burro to go with it.

See all these great features? The Blu-Ray drive, the 500GB hard drive, the 8-cell battery, and especially the big 17.3” widescreen LED display? They’re heavy. Not, like, hippie heavy – I mean literally heavy. As in, tough to lug around. I’m telling you, this thing’s seven and a half pounds if it’s an ounce.

That’s why I’m taking a cue from south of the border. Why put the strain of that bulky laptop bag on my ladylove’s delicate shoulders when I can just outsource the job to a hardy little donkey? Sure, its food will cost a little something, but I’m hoping it can get by on lawn clippings and my uneaten Arby’s scraps. Even if we have to pay to feed it, the expense will be nothing next to what we’d incur in chiropractic bills.

So if you know anybody who’s looking to get rid of a burro, let me know. Color and gender aren’t important, as long as it’s a sturdy, docile specimen who won’t make too much of a fuss when Erin needs to take her laptop in to the office.

Pretty sweet deal for the burro, too. Even though Erin is on the road a lot for work, I can guarantee that none of her trips involve hauling stuff up narrow Andean trails in the thin mountain air. I’ve been meaning to fix up the basement for my taxidermy studio, but it could just as easily be turned into a completely adequate stable. And if the burro likes movies, well, hey, we’ve got Blu-Ray now. It’s pretty much a burro’s dream job.

I think I have found the best wedding photographer in the St. Louis area.  The business is called Lens Magic, run out of the photographers home.  She is at the top of her game and does any type of shot you can think of, and the best part, the pricing is well below that of other photographers.  When you book with her, you get the entire day, unlike most photographers who just stay for an hour of the reception.  Shes there to capture the preparation, vows and post numptual celebration until the last guest leaves.  Normally, for this kind of service, you would expect to pay in the thousands, but her service is much less than that although should be much more.  I used her service for my own wedding and when the proofs came back, which was within two weeks, I was absolutely amazed at the number of photos I had to choose from.  Not only did we have a 100 page album full, she also had a large envelope with just as many photos inside.  We had professional pictures of every guest at our wedding and reception, which is much nicer than the disposable camera shots which normally is the only way you get those kind of pictures.  When it was time to order, the reprint prices were just as reasonable as her rates were for our wedding day.  The best part is, almost four years later, I was able to call her and still order prints.  She keeps all of the weddings she does on file so that its possible to do this.  She has actually done pictures for a wedding, then been called back for the couples 25th anniversary for copies of those pictures and had been able to produce them!

The best thing is, she does more than weddings!   Baby pictures, senior pictures- whatever you want.  When she does these types of pictures, she only books one person per day so that she can have as much time as necessary to capture exactly what you're wanting.  She will take whatever time is necessary, but without the additional charge that most photographers.  You just pay for the session as a whole package, not per hour or per shot!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this business.  This is definitely where I will have all of my professional pictures done from now on and will recommend her to anyone and everyone!

After a week full of clickjacking attacks, we're seeing other dodgy links being spread widely between Facebook users who should perhaps know better.

One that I have seen crop up a lot, is appearing in the status updates of Facebook users with phrases like:

This horrific photo forced photographer to kill himself! http://tinyurl.com/VerySadPhoto

and

This horrific photo forced photographer to kill himself! http://tinyurl.com/HorriblePic

Clicking on links like these can take you to Facebook pages which names such as “Man Commits Suicide 3 Days After Taking This Photo”.

These Facebook pages force you to first “Like” them and then republish the link on your own Facebook page (advertising it to your online friends) before you eventually get to see the photograph.

Just ask yourself this - do you really want to recommend a page to your friends, before you know what lies behind it? For all you know, you could be passing on a link which will ultimately take your online pals to a phishing page or malware.

As it happens, the pages are lying in any case.

The photograph - of an emaciated young girl in Sudan - was taken in March 1993 by prize-winning South African photo-journalist Kevin Carter. Carter did kill himself - but it was over a year later in South Africa, not three days after the photo was taken as claimed by the Facebook links.

You can probably imagine, however, that people would easily agree to publish the link to all their friends - in their morbid interest to see the photo - and thus help it spread quickly.

In fact, it's no surprise that links like these are spreading so quickly and virally across Facebook, when popular pages such as “I like your makeup…LOL JK, it looks like you got gangbanged by Crayola” (currently 1.7 million fans and counting) have republished it to all of their followers.

Sigh.. If only you had to take the equivalent of a driving test before you were allowed to run a Facebook page with that many followers. Just imagine the harm they could do by posting a stupid or malicious link..

So, what's the purpose of these pages about the horrific photograph? Well, if we want to give the creators of these pages the benefit of the doubt, it's possible that they have created them out of curiousity - to see how many people they could trick into “Like”ing their page.

But I suspect there's more to it than that. My feeling is that once a page like this has managed to gather a large enough following, it could be abused for the purposes of spamming, spreading malware and stealing identities.

So you really should take much more care over which pages you agree to “Like” on Facebook. Remember, you should never be bullied into publicising a Facebook page before they have shown you the content you are interested in. After all, if you like what you see, you'll only be too happy to share it with your friends, right?

If you have been unfortunate enough to have been ensnared by this latest nuisance, do the following:

  • Remove the update from your newsfeed (so your friends will no longer click on it)
  • Enter Edit profile/Likes and interests and remove the “Man Commits Suicide 3 Days After Taking This Photo” page from your list of Pages you like (you may have to click on “Show other Pages”)
  • Go to “Privacy Settings” and edit your settings for “Applications and websites” in order to check that you have not inadvertently added any unwanted applications.

Finally, if you're a regular user of Facebook, be sure to join the Sophos page on Facebook to be kept informed of the latest security threats.

Read the full description for this Sony laptop and ordered from Amazon. Received the laptop and it is exactly as described. It has great looks and a high quality feel – exactly what you would expect from a Sony product.

I hooked it up to my 1080p Samsung SyncMaster Lcd Monitor and the laptop had no problems outputting 1920×1080p High Definition content including video playback, although the laptop monitor screen itself only outputs a maximum resolution of 1366×768p.

The only two problems I have encountered is the touchpad occasionally misbehaving. I find when using the touchpad – a few times I have noticed that the arrow on screen will slow down or not correspond to your finger movements. I solved this problem by removing the “Alps Pointing Device for VAIO” driver, but “Alps Electric” – the manufacturer of the driver need to issue an update to fix this problem and also include support for more user touchpad gestures.

The second problem with this laptop is the ‘errrrrrrrr’ noise every time the fan spins up and slows down after a long periods of using the laptop – which I find very irritating. The ‘errrrrrrrr’ up and down fan noise is more noticeable if you are in a quite room with minimal background noise and using the laptop. I have never encountered this problem before with other brand of laptops. A quick Youtube search also showed many other users experiencing this kind of fan noise problem with the Sony Vaio.

A great buy, but would of exceeded my expectations if the laptop screen had a native resolution of 1920×1080p and a quieter fan.
Rating: 4 / 5

Major League Soccer is the largest league for professional soccer in North America, but it is only ten years old. There are many differences between the way in which Major League Soccer is formatted and the way in which European soccer leagues are formatted. First, it is important to understand how exactly European soccer leagues work. Unlike Major League Soccer, European soccer leagues do not have playoffs. Instead, a team gets three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points if they lose a game. At the end of each season the team with the most points in the table are crowned champions. This may seem a bit unexciting, but it actually has a lot of benefits. One of the major benefits is that each game counts for a lot more. This makes the regular season games exciting because players are trying their hearts out. This brings up one of the major downfalls of Major League Soccer.

Unlike European soccer leagues, major league soccer has a playoff system which makes it much easier to win a national championship or the MLS Cup. Regular season games do not count for as much because you do not need to come in first place in your division to qualify for the playoffs. A team that comes in third place in their division still has a chance of winning the MLS Cup because they will still qualify for the playoffs. This means each regular season game counts for significantly less. So many people ask why doesn't MLS switch to the formatting that European soccer leagues use. There are actually several reasons as to why they do not switch.

One of the main reasons is that American soccer fans are used to watching playoffs in other leagues such as the NFL, NBA, or NHL. It would be completely uncommon to them not to see a playoff between two teams at the end of the season. The next reason is that there are simply not enough teams in MLS to successfully do this. As of now, there are only about fourteen players in each league. Another major difference between Major League soccer and European leagues is that the level of play is much higher in Europe. This has to do with the fact that Europe has a culture that is obsessed with the game of soccer while America does not. Either way, these are some of the subtle differences that exist between MLS and European leagues.

Waste Management has grown annual dividends by 9% on average for the past 5 years. The dividend is well covered by free cash flows. Even the most recent dividend increase through these difficult times for the company from 2009 to 2010 was over 8%.

Share Repurchases

WM has avidly repurchased its own shares. During the four years of 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009, WM repurchased about $3 billion of its own stock. The market cap of WM as of this writing is about $17 billion, so this is about 18% of the current market cap. Share repurchases drastically decreased in 2008 and 2009.

Balance Sheet

WM has a balance sheet that is not as clean as I would like. They have $8 billion in long-term debt and an interest coverage of only 4.3. The debt/equity ratio is 1.41, which is higher than I am willing to take in an investment like this. This is not to say the company is in danger. They have a predictable source of cash flow and have their large debt under control. They could reduce share repurchases and redirect cash towards debt if they felt it was in the best interest of shareholders. But this debt, in my opinion, reduces flexibility and options when it comes to long-term profit growth.

Investment Thesis

The average person disposes of 4.5 pounds of waste every day.

I view Waste Management as a conservative, low-growth dividend investment. The stock price is a bit expensive, it has a significant amount of debt, but the business model is great and the dividends are well-covered.

Waste Management is focusing on growing its recycling abilities. WM currently uses waste as an energy source to power 1 million homes. By 2020, they plan to double that number to 2 million homes. WM is currently constructing 10 new plants to produce 50 Megawatts of power.

WM currently recycles 8 million tons of material annually. By 2020, they plan to nearly triple that number to over 20 million tons. They have been making recycling easier for residents, and have also added new services like electronics recycling.

The business is additionally expanding its services in the following ways:
Healthcare Solutions- a branch to address the needs of healthcare waste
LampTracker- a branch to recycle the huge number of lightbulbs disposed of each year
Green Squad- a branch to help business identify operational savings through efficiency and waste reduction

At the current time I’m not a buyer. I’m not willing to pay a P/E of 16 for a company with slow growth and a lot of debt, even if I like the underlying business. I’m not saying this is a bad investment, or that the price will decrease, but simply that I don’t find the stock appealing at the moment.

EPS growth is being driven mainly by share repurchases. In the fourth quarter of 2010, the company spent nearly as much money on share repurchases as on dividends. I like companies that use their money to create shareholder value, but WM at this time does not impress me.

Risks

Waste Management’s core industry of trash is always going to be necessary, but WM does face risks anyway. They are susceptible to energy prices for powering their vast army of vehicles and operations. While they are in a conservative industry, they are still susceptible to economic weakness because trash output decreases during times of economic recession. Waste Management also faces risks in the form of contract losses to competitors if they don’t manage their business well. Nonetheless, they do have a strong, firmly entrenched business.

Conclusion and Valuation

Due to the relative expense of the stock and the modestly large amount of debt, I don’t consider Waste Management to be on the top of my buy list, but I do like the company, the industry, and the dividends. If interested in the stock, I would look for a lower entry price.

Full Disclosure: I do not own Waste Management stock at the time of this writing.

from: Morigans Blog
Rickeys Blog

While we pine for the days of large 16:10 panels, we have to admit Hewlett-Packard knows how to craft a sleek-looking 16:9. This week, the electronics manufacturer launched four new no-nonsense LCD screens at the movie-friendly aspect ratio, the HP 2010i, 2210m, 2310m and 2710m. While the first two digits of each alphanumeric reflect its diagonal screen size (except for the 2210m, which is apparently 21.5 inches across), the 'i' designation apparently reflects the fact that you're getting a sub-par 1600 x 900 resolution and DVI / VGA inputs, when the other three monitors also display HDMI content in full 1080p. All four panels have reasonably low response times, embedded 2W speakers and 1000:1 contrast ratios, and at their current prices ($180, $220, $260 and a likely $350-$400, respectively) all will likely make suitable choices if you're in the market for an above-average computer screen. Us? We'll make do with old Dell products while we wait for the company's wallpaper model.
