It is not just the US where the Apple iPad is being picked up like hot cakes. Out there in Asia, Japan to be precise, the Apple tablet is set to make waves in a major manner. The arrival of the tablet has in fact impacted the notebook market as a whole. A survey on how the iPad will perform in the Japanese market has revealed that the device which was launched in Japan on May 28 – just a few days ago  - has helped Apple to eclipse home grown major Sony by a mile.

The survey, by Tokyo-based market research firm BCN has found that the iPad as been driving Apple’s share of the domestic notebook market and the numbers have more than tripled in May on a month-to-month basis and touched the 11.5% mark. Japan’s handset market had earlier itself welcomed the iPhone with enthusiasm and the survey results say that the iPad is set to replicate this success.

BCN banked on POS data collected from among 2,364 electronics retailers in Japan and found that the Apple share in that segment stood at just 3.5% in April. However, as soon as the iPad launched on May 28, the company overtook Sony, which at 9.3per cent, declined to No. 5 in the notebook sales ranking. It has been revealed that the iPad has been selling about three times faster than the iPhone did in the first ten days of unveiling in the Japanese market.

The notebook market, in the meanwhile, continues to be dominated by Toshiba, Fujitsu and NEC in the first three slots respectively. However, with the new Apple device coming in, the whole scene seems like going through a shake up.

As the start of the FIFA World Cup™ approaches the coaches of the teams going to Germany this year, find themselves in very similar situations and all facing the same large looming question of whom to take with when they go to play for football soccer’s most coveted prize: bringing the World Cup Trophy home to their fatherland.

However there is one national coach that seems to be unworried: Anibal Ruiz. A Uruguayan by birth, this 50 year-old football trainer is eager to prove to his adopted country that he is a trueborn son by bringing home to Paraguay the prize of all prizes. He is confident that his team will be well prepared after playing their friendly games against Mexico, Norway, Denmark, and Georgia. You can see a determination in his face; instead of the furrow of thought most coaches have on their faces at this time before the tournament. Determination that he is sure will propel his team to do better than the second-round exits that Paraguay has had in the last two World Cup encounters, first in France in '98 and later in Korea/Japan in '02.

Reflecting on his teams draw to meet England in the first round of the Cup, Ruiz again showed his determined face stating, “What is it that every team at this level aspires to? Playing against the very best, that's the only way to prove how good you are. We need to prove ourselves. Paraguay is a big-game side. Obviously, we are aware that England is a great side, but I maintain that it is the best thing that could have happened and the players agree. It's a bonus to be playing them first; it won't allow us a moment's overconfidence. From now until the World Cup kicks off, and during the tournament itself, we need to be totally switched on and focused to avoid making even the slightest error.”

Ruiz has taken not only a very determined view on the upcoming tournament but has also taken a very realistic view and knows exactly what his team should expect in the upcoming tournament and is also very aware of the need of his players to be aware of what is upcoming. Paraguay’s recent friendly match with Wales was according to Ruiz “Extremely positive.” Claiming that more than anything the match gave the team a chance to meet and go over a few things, and remember how important it is that the team is all on the same page. When all the players are all coming from different systems of play from their separate club teams it is important to give them time to adjust to the national team play, and there is no question that Ruiz understands this notion.

Having already decided on 18 of the 23 players on his team Ruiz only has a few more decisions left to make regarding the team. One of those is Rogue Santa Cruz. With his recent injury there is some small question on whether he will be able to paly at a 100 percent or not. However, both Santa Cruz and his doctor are very optimistic about his ability to play in time. Santa Cruz says that he will be ready to play by April 15, which would give him nearly two months of practice before the tournament starts. As for Ruiz, he is satisfied with that date and the confidence that Santa Cruz and his doctor show and is certain that Santa Cruz will be ready in time.

This year one can expect to see a different sort of team from Paraguay, one that is well organized and well coached. Focusing their offensive strategies on width and penetration instead of direct passes—as they have done in the past. If they make it past the first big hurdle in England expect this years team from Paraguay to go far.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazilian prosecutors say there are “strong indications” soccer star Adriano transferred money to a notorious drug lord held responsible for attacking a police helicopter last year.

State prosecutors said in an e-mailed statement that after taking a deposition from Adriano, they would request permission to examine the player's bank accounts and telephones.

Prosecutors say they are focusing on the alleged transfer last December of $33,000 from Adriano to a drug lord wanted by police.

WASHINGTON - Scoring goals may come down to only cracking physics equations for robot soccer players from Carnegie Mellon University competing in this month’s RoboCup 2010 world championship in Singapore.

Thanks to a new algorithm that helps them to predict the ball’s behaviour based on physics principles, the CMDragons will be able to out-maneuver their opponents and find creative solutions to game situations that could even surprise their programmers.

“Over the years, we have developed many successful teams of robot soccer players, but we believe that the physics-based planning algorithm is a particularly noteworthy accomplishment,” said Manuela Veloso, professor of computer science and leader of Carnegie Mellon’s two robot soccer teams.

“Past teams have drawn from a repertoire of pre-programmed behaviors to play their matches, planning mostly to avoid obstacles and acting with reactive strategies.

“To reach RoboCup’s goal of creating robot teams that can compete with human teams, we need robots that can plan a strategy using models of their capabilities as well as the capabilities of others, and accurate predictions of the state of a constantly changing game,” said Veloso, who is president of the International RoboCup Federation.

“Physics-based planning gives us an advantage when a robot is dribbling the ball and needs to make a tight turn, or any other instance that requires an awareness of the dynamics of the ball,” said Stefan Zickler, a newly minted Ph.D. in computer science who developed the algorithm for his thesis.

“Will the ball stick with me when I turn? How fast can I turn? These are questions that the robots previously could never answer.”

The algorithm could enable the robots to concoct some new kicks, including bank shots, Zickler said. But the computational requirements for kick planning are greater than for dribbling, so limited computational power and time will keep this use to a minimum.

One challenge that the scientists are facing is figuring out how to get robots to coordinate with each other - a grand challenge facing artificial intelligence.

“RoboCup is focusing the energies of many smart young minds on solving this problem, which ultimately will enable using distributed intelligence technology in the general physical world,” Veloso said. (ANI)

The Satellite series of Notebook computers from Toshiba are a good affordable computer line with some very impressive features. Whether for a desktop replacement or for mobile computing you cannot go wrong with one of these versatile and affordable computers.

Listing all the basic features for this line of notebook computer does not do justice to the affordable price that you would pay for a computer with a dual core processor and 1 Giga byte of memory. I have a pretty decent desktop computer that has 1024 mega bytes of memory and a good AMD Athlon processor. It plays some pretty good current video games that require not only good processors but a good video card. The laptop that I am typing this article on and about has the same memory and a little less processor speed than my Compaq desktop. The only thing lacking in this general purpose notebook is a video card that would equal my desktop computer. The processor is a dual core from Intel, which means it uses two cores to process information for two separate tasks, actually better than my desktop's processor.

The dual core processor ensures being able to have two separate and different programs running at the same time and not have one affect the other or draw resources from the processor as a whole while both programs are running. You can run your anti virus scan while surfing the web, which I tried, and not have your web surfing slow down due to the running virus scan. While you're doing one task and your computer suddenly starts another like a virus scan, update or anything else you will not have the first program slow down because the processor is being overworked. This is a very nice feature in any kind of computer and now is all the rage. With gaming it means that you can play the game and not have to turn off all the extra programs on your computer but for this general notebook computer it means that you can work and not have your current work interrupted by programs running in the background.

I will list the features of the Toshiba Satellite A105 line and specific ones to the Satellite model A105-S4284 that I was able to review.

Every notebook in the new Satellite A105 notebook line comes standard with the following:

• TruBrite™ technology that offers a brilliant display for games or movies, and easy viewing of spreadsheets and other productivity applications;

• Toshiba's DVD SuperMulti (+/- R Double Layer) drive that reads and writes in up to 11 formats and nearly doubles a recordable DVD's storage capacity in dual-layer format;

• SRS TruSurround XT™ technology for a rich audio experience;

• DDR2 533 MHz SDRAM memory for better performance of productivity applications and music, picture and video multimedia files;

• four USB 2.0 ports for connectivity of accessories and peripherals;

• Express Media Player that gives user's convenient access to CD and DVD playback and other multimedia functions without booting up the Windows operating system.

The model I received for review has an estimated single unit price (ESUP) under $900, see Toshiba web site for more prices and models.

One of the biggest features I was impressed with when I had the notebook out and set up was the screen clarity and resolution when I watched a movie. And by the way, set up refers to basically peeling off the plastic from the top, opening screen and hooking up power cord. I hooked up the side S-video and front audio outputs to my larger TV and the picture was clearer and better quality than my television. Setting the screen to output for the television is even simpler with the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver program that has a simple click and select feature to choose which output you would like the screen to go to. If you find you have accidentally set the output to something and cannot view the notebook screen without having to hookup a monitor or TV you can simply press the Fn and F5 keys to set the system back to the default setting of notebook screen.

I found this out from first hand experience while playing with the settings and clicking on the wrong setting only to find the screen dark and the closest monitor downstairs. It makes for a handy feature for those times when you're a bit too quick to change the settings for your screen output. You can have it on the default or notebook setting and you will be seeing the normal view on your notebooks screen. The other two options are a connected monitor or a television in many combination and resolutions. The largest screen resolution the notebooks screen has is 1280 x 800, plenty wide for those widescreen movies which this notebook with its Windows XP Media Center 2005 Edition plays very well.

Other multimedia features that are nice with the Toshiba Satellite A105 and Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 include the Windows Display calibration wizard to ensure your seeing the video and multimedia content using the best possible clarity and resolution using whatever monitor, TV or the screen on your notebook you use. Windows Media Center also includes a one stop organizer for all your multimedia content so you don't have to go searching using different programs for anything multimedia related. You also don't have to use separate programs for videos, music and everything else on your notebook with the Windows Media Player program.

I really liked the sound that comes with the two small speakers on the upper portion of the notebook above the keyboard. The Toshiba notebook comes with SRS TruSurround XT™ technology that makes the small size of the speakers and the quality and richness of the sound coming out of them at odds with your expectations. The audio and music from the small speakers are clear and sound very good while at comfortable viewing distances to the screen for movie watching but anything like trying to watch a movie on a separate television without also hooking up the external audio would not work well.

The Toshiba notebooks also come with a program called Toshiba Virtual sound that helps filter and create clear and great sounding surround sound for the little notebook. It of course does not create a true surround sound but you can tell the difference when this program is running or not. It sounds more realistic and true when you have the program running, I played CD's while writing as well as watched a few movies on the notebook both on the regular screen of the notebook as well as on a connected television. There is noticeable difference and clarity with this program. There is also a thumb wheel volume control so you do not have to interrupt your program by going to the control panel or task bar to control the volume.

The 5-in-1 Bridge Media Adapter is another feature that is very handy and becoming a must for any multimedia solutions for a computer. You can insert a memory card such a an SD, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro and XD memory cards that are common to today's digital cameras and download pictures to the notebook. This would have been especially nice when I took a vacation to the Badlands of North and South Dakota and brought my notebook to download pictures to while taking tons of photos. I had to use a cord from the camera to my notebook and this would have left out that cord that was an inconvenience to bother with.

With the media reader port you can download the pictures right to the ample disk drive and save them for later editing and viewing. You can also use the software package that comes with the Toshiba notebook from Google called Picasa2 to edit, enhance and create slideshows with your digital images.

The DVD drive that comes with the Toshiba Satellite line of notebooks is a multifunction drive that plays and records a very large variety of CD's and DVD's; including the newest double layer DVD's. The DVD's you now buy for movies are usually a double layer on the same disc to fit more information on them. You can buy the DVD's to record your own movies, music and data on for about three dollars a disc depending on the quality and company you get them from. The double layer ensures you can get a full movie and all the added features that typically come with today's movies. It also means you can record 8.5 Gigabytes of information or about 11 CD's worth of music. The DVD recorder has multi function and media types so you don't have to worry about the type of discs you purchase, the “-” and “+” of many of the types of data discs to record will no longer be a worry for you.

The Toshiba Satellite line of notebook computers comes with DDR2 SDRAM; my review computer has 1024 Mega Bytes. SDRAM is a newer and more stable memory chip that uses more of the signal that transfers the memory to and from the processor and other components of the notebook. I won't go into a long winded explanation with all kinds of technical explanations because frankly you don't really need to know about much of it other than it is the newest and best memory chips that computers are using. The DDR2 SDRAM is currently a standard for computer memory and has been proven a reliable memory type. The laptop contains two sticks of memory on my review model so to upgrade to any more memory you would have to pull out one or both sticks and buy ones with more memory on them. When buying new memory you need to know the DDR2 SDRAM and the frequency they are using, 533 Hz in my case. It is a simple operation in this notebook to remove and put in new ones, even easier than on a desktop.

On the bottom of the notebook you unscrew the cover and remove it, being careful not to break the plastic tabs that hold the cover in. You then simply move the two tabs away from the card on each side and pull the edge of the card furthest from the gold colored connectors up. You pull the card up and out away from the connector and insert the new one in the opposite manner. Push the new one in till it is fully seated into it's connector after inspecting the connector and slot so no foreign matter is on it. In other words no dust or junk is on the connector or in the slot the card is going in. You push the card in and down until it is fully seated and push the two tabs into the card. Replace the cover; you might have to slightly bend the cover to get all the plastic tabs inserted correctly, your done. On a desktop model computer you might have to move a drive cage or other components out of the way, so on this model of notebook computers Toshiba has made it very easy to replace the memory sticks yourself.

The Toshiba notebook comes with both 4 USB and one iLink 1394 connector for hooking up external devices such as external drives, your mouse, an external keyboard and other devices. The two side connections might be in the way if you're using en external mouse instead of the keypad but I would think you would use these for temporary devices like downloading a camera or a jump drive.
The iLink 1394 connector is for more of a special purpose cable for connecting firewire devices such as external drives or camcorders to your notebook. The Toshiba Satellite line of notebook computers does not contain a video capture device to capture video from a camcorder. These devices are commonly a part of many video cards or as a separate component that can be connected using a USB or Firewire connection. This would be an easy addition to the Toshiba notebook in the form of a separate component such as a Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 DVD Creator. Toshiba also sells these so you do not have to go searching around the internet or at stores to find all your accessories.
The Satellite A105 has an external monitor connection as well as the S-video out so you can hook up a television and watch movies or even home movies you have created with the Windows Movie Maker program that also comes with your notebook. You can use headphones or external speakers with your notebook as well as hook them up to a TV like I did for watching a movie on my television. The S-video cable is only for video to other s-video connections so you will need to connect the audio out to your RCA connectors on a TV using some audio cables and possibly an adapter.
I had no difficulties in connecting up any of the various connections; both for my camera using both the USB cable and the media card directly into the 5-in-1 port and the television to the various connections and the speaker cables from the audio to the television. There is also a microphone connection to use an external microphone for recording voice or even a digital recorder. I have a small digital recorder that works well for recording interviews and to be able to copy that onto the notebook for saving or editing works very well and is quite handy. Windows Movie Maker will also edit audio as well as video both together and separately.
Connecting my Satellite notebook up to the internet was simple and easy with the Windows Network setup wizard and the rear network connection using my network I have for my home. I can also connect to the local wireless network that my city has setup without difficulties by just turning on the external switch to turn on the antenna and login to the network. The Security Center that Windows service pack 2 comes with includes a firewall program to secure your internet, local area network and wireless network from intrusion as well as security of personal identity.
I would also recommend some internet security in the form of a suite of protection such as the PC Cillin Internet Security Suite 2007 or you can go with Toshiba's recommendation of MacAfee antivirus and internet protection. The notebook comes with a McAfee Security Center trial program that will protect you until you decide what you want for protection and security. You should never connect to any network without some kind of protection from viruses, spy ware and privacy invasion.
The Satellite A105 comes with a variety of hard drive sizes depending on the model and with today's larger programs you will want to make sure you start with a large drive. When I first started reviewing games and computer hardware a video game that was one gigabyte was huge but now in comparison we often see games at five and more gigabytes. Windows XP today needs to have 1.5 gigabytes hard drive space in itself and all the other programs you commonly use on your computer will also require about as much space each.
The A105 I received to review had about 10 gigabytes of programs on it as a starter, you will probably need to add more to that for things like a few choice games you like, Adobe Reader and antivirus protection to name a few. I have found that a hundred gigabyte drive is about a minimum for any computer and to have more is a safety feature so you don't run out of space. Your computer uses some of the hard drive to store temporary memory instead of using your memory sticks, this frees up the memory for more immediate things you are using. The temporary storage on your hard drive is used often and you need to make sure you don't run out of drive space or your computer will slow down and give warnings that you are running out of drive space. Starting off your computer with a drive with plenty of empty space makes sense to make sure you have enough for future programs and storage for pictures, video and audio.
The Satellite series of computers from Toshiba is an affordable solution to today's computer needs. The Satellite A105 has some very good features; I was very impressed with the screen resolution and clarity. The multimedia features ensure you have all the programs and hardware you need for today's basic audio, video and movie playing needs. Windows Media Center Edition 2005 also comes with some added features that make for a great all around multimedia computer. Whether you buy the Satellite series computer as a desktop replacement or for it's on the go functionality you will not be disappointed.
The one feature that really impressed me over all the others was the Toshiba Media Player. You can play movies or CD's without booting up Windows and having to wait for all your startup programs and Windows to boot up. Using this program for your notebook allows ease of use for the multimedia features without the hassles and time for Windows to open. You can start playing movies and CD's in much less time and without having to go into the Windows Media Center or another media program.
Simply open the notebook screen and press the Media Player key on the media button area of the keyboard instead of the power button. The screen will go past the normal boot up screen to the Media screen and you can open the drive and insert a CD or DVD. The CD or DVD will play according to the type it is. To control the movie or CD functions you have the movie buttons on the side of the keyboard or the screen will tell you the keys to press for the CD functions. It takes much less time to start playing a movie or CD than to boot up windows so if you are using your notebook as a portable video player or CD player as well as all its other functions it works out extremely well.
Overall I was very impressed with the Toshiba Satellite A105-S4284 notebook computer. Two things that are excellent features are the screen clarity, resolution and image quality and the Toshiba Media Player functionality.

Hi all, I have a friends laptop, it just will not start up no matter what I have tried. It seems to start into the bios then stops, I have tried to reset it with the reset button, taken out the battery & tried pressing the start button without the power on. I have tried using a Win XP SP2 OS disk, it starts to run then just stops. The HDD light flickers on, then off, momentarily when I have pressed the on button. I just can not get into the bios to do anything with removing it to reload it. The screen does not light up, I have tried an additional monitor to no avail. The power supply lights & battery charging lights, light up, also the fan runs.
Any ideas to get this running again please.

Since 2006 almost all notebook manufacturers in the world flows, “notebook battery recalls,” more than a year has been restored, but the Japanese companies a few days before the Council, the Japanese market for the brand, said sales “LaVie M”, “LaVie GM”, and ‘VersaPro “and therefore these three can cause distortion notebook repair free to provide users with fear as to the existence of battery overheating.

NEC also said at the same time, users do not care, that may cause a fire in a series of batteries and so far in an injury case requires.

Well, it's the time of year that every parent wants to go see Santa Claus. No, not for themselves, but to get a photo of their child with Santa. Quite often it's not even your idea, but you get the request from your relatives wanting a photo done. As your kids get older I'm sure many parents out there are pro's at this. But, for parents taking their child for the first time when they are one or two years old, this can be a challenge. I will give you some tips I picked up from my experience that I just got home from.

One of the biggest ones is that you don't want to underestimate the waiting time. Keep in mind even if the line looks short there could be a few reasons that the wait will be longer than you expect. One is that the line may wind around in an area that you can not see yet. My guess is the reason they do this is they figure once you in line for a certain amount of time the chances of you leaving once you see this are rather slim. Another possible reason is because I saw a lot of parents where one parent would wait in line and then right at the end the other parent who had been wandering the mall with the child or sitting elsewhere with them all of a sudden come up and join them line at the end. This could also happen where one child was waiting in line but three of their siblings join them at the last minute. Hey, it's time to be in holiday spirits, so instead of getting upset just be prepared for this to happen ahead of time.

Like I said, your wait in line is likely to be substantial. Of course on weekends this time of year it is even worse, but weekdays can be just as bad. Keep in mind some schools close for close to two weeks around Christmas time. In anticipation of this I have some tips. First, check you child's diaper before you get in line. Especially if you are alone with your child there is no way you can get out of line and get back in without risking the people in the back of the line making an issue of it. Obviously if your child is upset because of a dirty diaper, he/she won't be in the mood to smile a lot for the photo with Santa Claus. Another tip along the same line of thought is make sure your child has had something to eat recently. Depending on how the line is arranged it might be impossible to feed your child while waiting. Finally , make sure your child is well rested. As I said you don't know how long it will be until you get your turn and if he/she is getting tired obviously they will not be in a good mood for the photo. One final suggestion for while in line, bring a toy to keep your child occupied. Don't bring something that will be disruptive to kids around yours, but something that keep your child's attention.

I also have some tips for when you finally get to see Santa Claus. The first is, keep in mind most places will allow your child sit on Santa's lap for free, but if you try to take a photo with your digital camera they will charge a “sitting fee” if you don't buy any photos from them. Most will let the parents be in the photo area out of the photo itself to try to get the child's attention and make them smile during the photo, so have an idea what you will do to stop your child from crying and get them to smile. Some places are very nice about it and if your child is throwing a fit the first time they try to take the photos they will offer to let you wait while the next child goes and try one more time afterwards. Obviously this is to their advantage too because you are unlikely to buy a photo of your child screaming. If the place you are having yours done doesn't offer this option, make sure you ask if they would let you do it, I am guessing most will.

It's always a thrill getting that “cute photo of your child and Santa”, but keep in mind it takes preparation for it to happen.

“I took this picture at the Wickland House in Bardstown, Kentucky,” reports Kyle. “It was home to three governors. I was looking down a hallway and felt like I should take the picture. My camera's flash didn't go off twice in a row and then this showed. It looks like a lady in riding clothes to me.” See the photo in the Gallery.

Paramore singer Hayley Williams joins the ranks of “Twilight's” Ashley Greene and “High School Musical” star Vanessa Hudgens.

The 21-year-old singer had a topless photo of her sent out to her 600,000 Twitter followers before it was deleted from the account Thursday night (May 27).

“well… my night just changed drastically. got hacked,” she tweeted.

Unfortunately, gossip sites had already taken screen grabs of the photo of the redheaded singer, who was staring into the camera in the photo.

Paramore also consists of Josh and Zac Farro, Jeremy Davis and Taylor York. The band was nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy and won a People's Choice Award and several Teen Choice Awards.

There had been a lot of rumors about Apple netbooks but Apple has always denying to jump into the manufacture of low end gadgets. Apple fans on the other hand are so keen that they keep on showing off their interest. We had seen an Apple tablet concept by a student an now we have an Apple netbook concept.

Flickr user “Machines that go bing!” has this Apple netbook in his photostream with the title “Foxconn Apple Netbook”. The user has not defined any details but this one looks like a real Apple gadget. If Apple ever planned a netbook, it would be like this. From the word “Foxconn” in the title, can we get the clue that this netbook is under development at Apple’s supplier Foxconn? No, I don’t think so, Foxconn has very strict norms in regard to secrecy, we cannot expect a leak. As we had seen one of their employees committed suicide after facing pro-secrecy abuse from the company.

From the picture, it looks like widescreen unibody netbook with extra folding cover. A cool concept but Apple has been officially denying the chances of a netbook.

When asked today about the possibility of an Apple netbook, Steve Jobs said something to the effect of, “The market is just getting started – we’ll see how it goes.”

Huh? Here’s how the netbook market’s going, Steve: pretty much every major computer company has a netbook but you. Apple’s a prime candidate for a netbook, too. Know why? Because it’s just about the only company that could get away with selling it for well over $500. I bet Apple could sell a netbook for at least $600 or more.

So why should Apple, in particular, get into netbooks?

1. It gets people in the door at a low price point. Remember the Mac Mini? The Mac Mini’s sole purpose is to get people who are scared off by Apple’s relatively high prices into the game. But there’s a problem; nobody really buys desktops any more — especially not novice and/or basic computer users. Everyone buys laptops now.

At $999+, getting into an Apple laptop is a bit daunting for most people. But offer the Apple portable computing experience at near Mac Mini prices, and see what happens. There’s no big danger in offering an Apple netbook at $600 or more, so long as the next least expensive option remains at $999. PC notebook manufacturers don’t have that same luxury. You can’t price netbooks higher than your cheapest notebooks.

2. Netbooks are big on the whole alternative operating system thing. Regular people who would normally buy Windows-based computers are buying Linux-based netbooks without ever having used Linux before. It’s an even shorter leap to OS X. I mean, you already own an iPod, right? I use a PC for day-to-day stuff but I’d buy a Mac netbook for traveling because I know it’d be well-built, fast, and great for surfing the web.

“Regular” people would probably do the same thing. They’d say, “Oh, this doesn’t have Windows but at least I’ve heard of Apple and I like how it looks.” Plenty of people have at least used a Mac before, too, even if they usually use Windows.

3. It’s time for Apple to put out another small-ish laptop. No matter how light the MacBook Air gets, some people still want a computer that’s dimensionally small and lightweight. Howsabout a 10-inch screen? Even bring back the 12-inch screens. I saw an old 12-inch iBook G4 on the train the other week and did a double-take. They just don’t make ‘em like that any more.

4. The iPhone and iPod Touch desperately need to be integrated with something substantial. I’m not saying to go the RedFly or Palm Folio (R.I.P.) route and make the netbook useless on its own, but maybe make the netbook the one device that lets you easily tether your iPhone or perhaps include pre-set wireless synchronization or something. I’m also a huge fan of the idea of letting the iPhone/iPod Touch serve as the trackpad for the device, but you want to make the netbook so that people can buy it without having to own the other devices.

5. Make the decision easy for everyone by giving it a multi-touch screen like the one on the iPhone/iPod Touch and a good keyboard like the one on the MacBooks. People complain relentlessly about the trackpads, mouse buttons, and keyboards on today’s currently available netbooks. It might take an innovator like Apple to fix that problem.

We all know that Father's Day is a brilliant chance to show your dad how much you love and appreciate him, but it brings a major dilemma with it. Men, and especially fathers, are notoriously difficult to buy for. This especially applies if your father is a technophobe because the majority of Father's Day gift ideas are electronic goods.

Well, if your dad is a technophobe and you are struggling for Father's Day gift ideas, look no further than the top 7 technophobe gifts below!

  1. A Fussball Table - This is the perfect gift for a technophobe dad because there is absolutely no technology involved. The game is fun and can be enjoyed by the whole family, especially if you happen to be competitive. It will also no doubt take him back to his youth! The cheapest ones cost as little as $50 so it is an absolute bargain too!
  2. Tickets To A Soccer/Basketball/Baseball Match - For the sporty dad, tickets to a sports event can provide a memorable experience that he will not forget for years to come. This Father's Day gift idea is difficult to top in future years but need not be expensive. Some tickets are as little as $10 a piece, although you might want to throw in a hotdog as well for good measure!
  3. A Universal Remote - No technophobe dad wants to use one remote for the TV, another for the DVD player and a third for Tivo/Sky so get him a universal remote. At $20 to $25 for a really good one, he can enjoy all of his TV shows with no difficulty at all.
  4. A Sports Car For A Day - You can now rent sports car for a couple of hours or even a whole day for upwards of $200. This is a pricey but fabulous present that could help your technophobe dad to live all of his childhood dreams and pose for a while. It's the stuff dreams are made of!
  5. Prehistoric Man Gifts - You can actually buy these on the Internet at http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/p/pre-historic_man_gifts.asp. They are hilarious cartoons that feature cavemen making jokes about inventions like the wheel. If you want to have a bit of fun with your technophobe dad and make him laugh then this is a must!
  6. A Personalized Number Plate - These would vary in price but they are very safe as far as Father's Day gift ideas are concerned. What man would not want his very own number plate for his car to show off with?
  7. The Dummies Guide To The Internet - Obvious but necessary! Your father could have hours of fun on the Internet if he knew how to use it so invest $20 and get him the book that will teach him to do just that!

Even if you do not get your father any of the above, your Father's Day gift ideas should be original and relevant if you really want to show you care. One word of advice though - avoid socks at all costs!

An interview aired on a CNN website on Thursday has led to Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban, being fined $100,000 for comments regarding the NBA’s biggest star, LeBron James. The NBA has made clear its stance on any comments made about a player before July 1st, when free agents officially hit the market (in other words, when certain players can choose to opt out of their contracts). The news finds an opportune moment to be publicised in this country considering Barcelona’s broadcasted opinion on Cesc Fabregas and his future.

“The player has shown a desire to play for Barca. But we will not be entering into any talks until Arsenal are happy. Cesc has a contract with his club and we have to be respectful.” -Txiki Begiristain (Daily Telegraph)

These were the sentiments of the Barcelona technical secretary only a few days ago. It is a respectful notion but utterly hollow in its veracity. Barcelona had already engaged in a very public courting of Fabregas and have continued to ‘respectfully’ undermine Arsene Wenger and Arsenal with Xavi and Messi, their two most talented players, heading proceedings in the media. If it is respectful for Xavi to state that it’s ‘criminal’ for Fabregas to remain at Arsenal then some of Begiristain’s words must be lost in translation.

Across the Atlantic the NBA are allowed to levy fines up to a staggering $1m to owners who publicly attempt to unsettle players before their contract allows talks to be held. What did Cuban say to justify the $100,000 fine?

“Come July 1st, yeah, of course. Anybody would be interested in LeBron James and if he leaves via free agency then it’s going to be tough… What I do know about LeBron in the minimal time I’ve spent talking to him is he just wants to win. Money’s not an issue.”

Hardly on par with the recurrent commentary from Spain’s big two in the last couple of seasons. Even more stringent is Steve Kerr, president of operations at the Phoenix Suns, being fined $10,000 for simply joking in a radio interview that LeBron may be interested in the mid table allure of his team. It may seem laughable but at least it is consistent, which is something that governing bodies in football find difficult (we persist on cautioning players for celebrating topless yet there’s no reprimand for clubs in the tapping up of players who are under contract).

If a similar method to the NBA is to be adopted what would be the parameters of discourse? I think, simply, it should be illegal for club representatives to publicly attempt to unsettle any player who is under contract. This leaves much to the subjective interpretation of what exactly is deemed ‘unsettling’ but why not take after the NBA and make it a ubiquitous regulation? Pedantic, yes, but also necessary. It saves clubs from being subjected to external pressures and also allows players to make more informed decisions about their own futures. Let’s face it; it also stops fans from being bombarded with every little update in any saga, large or small, (who a player ate with, where his father flew on what date to meet whom, if said player is bound by prophesy and destiny to return to his homeland etc) by people like me.

Though Barcelona are the latest offenders it is clear that many top clubs use the media as a bartering tool in their transfer dealings. I don’t believe things will change just yet or even if measures like the ones in play at the NBA are workable in the football world but I do think a trial rule, of some kind, is needed to curb the public overtures of clubs to players who are under contract.

They’re almost here — in just a couple of weeks all that hard work will be put to the test. I’m talking about finals.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals.
So to help you get through this difficult time, I present my ill-thought-out, and almost certainly biased, study guide of what is about to kick off on June 11 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Favorites:
A quick search of the Internet will throw up a handful of names that will be fighting among themselves for the big prize in July. The top two are probably Brazil and Spain, with Argentina and England close behind.
Given its hugely successful history, having won the title five times and as the only team to have qualified for every World Cup, anyone would be a fool to bet against Brazil. Real fan favorites across the globe, they play an exciting game with almost everyone on the pitch seemingly attacking the goal.
Spain, meanwhile, is the current European champion and a few months back would probably have been clearly at the top of the pile. Since then, injuries have taken a serious toll on the star players on the team, and it remains to be seen whether or not they will make it back in time and if, when they do return, they will be fully fit.
It is easy to think Argentina should be a powerful force this summer with the current FIFA World Player of the Year, Lionel Messi, in its ranks and one of the best ever players, Diego Maradona, as its coach. But Maradona is an enigma, and has a proven record of going from hero to zero, or vice versa, in a heartbeat. Just ask any England fan about his two goals against us in ‘86.
That England are touted to be among the top teams this year should probably make me happy, and it is certainly true that under the iron-fisted rule of our (Italian) manager, we have had some great performances. But it is hard not to have serious doubts about which side will really show up. Time and again England have failed to relive the glory of our single triumph in 1966, and Monday’s warm-up game against Mexico did nothing to light any fires.

Team USA:
After a stunning victory over European champions Spain in last year’s Confederations Cup in South Africa, could this be the year that Team USA makes waves not just abroad, but at home too?
A lack of a global superstar among its ranks, and some serious injuries that have taken a chunk out of the squad, mean it is incredibly unlikely it could go all the way, but what if by some freakish accident the USA won the World Cup this year? To be really blunt, a lot of people, myself included, would be absolutely horrified.
Before someone goes and throws me and my tea into the ocean, I better make it clear that this is no anti-American sentiment. I would love it if the USA really took football to heart and became a serious force in the sport. But right now the country just doesn’t care enough. Any other country would go crazy if they won the cup. Here, I’m not even convinced everyone would even notice.

Home Sweet Home:
The host country for this World Cup might be South Africa, but this is Africa’s tournament. Whether or not you have a home nation to support, go adopt a second team from any of South Africa, Nigeria, Algeria, Ghana, Cameroon or Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast).
Home nations have traditionally had great success, the tournament having been won six times previously by its host, and anyone who followed South Korea’s run to the semifinals as joint hosts back in 2002 should know that, with a bit of luck and with the whole crowd behind you, anything is possible. Should any of the African nations walk away with the crown, or even make a run to the final, don’t expect the party to stop for a long, long time. So reawaken your evolutionary roots and grab your own slice of what could be a wild ride.

Heroes and Villains:
French midfielder Zinedine Zidane ended his career by headbutting his Italian counterpart, Marco Materazzi, in the final in 2006. In a moment of insanity he reacted to verbal insults by the Italian and, however offensive Materazzi’s taunts may have been, was rightly shown a red card. The tournament’s best player walked off as a villain and will be forever remembered for that.
There will certainly be other contenders, but ahead of this year’s World Cup, another French player has already staked his claim on Zidane’s crown. Thierry Henry destroyed his own reputation and made a lot of enemies in Ireland with a blatant hand-ball that secured France their place in this year’s tournament. Anyone with Irish blood will likely still have a team to support this year though, whomever France are playing.

Heartbreak:

There will be penalties. At some point in the knockout stages, two teams will be unable to decide a winner by the end of regulation, sending the game into extra time and then almost inevitably into a penalty shoot-out.

Most football fans will tell you this is a horrible way to decide a contest, but it is really the only truly reliable way. Hearts will fill with dread both on the field and around the world as each player takes his turn to square off in front of goal, and ultimately one player will stumble under the weight of expectation on his shoulders. While you can lose a penalty shoot-out, you can never “win” — you merely survive.

As an England fan, my dreams are of winning the cup, but my nightmares are of being knocked out on penalties. To Germany. Again.

Trouble:

Football fans, the English in particular, have a bad reputation. Some of this is well-earned, but it is all too easy to get hung up on the headlines from the past and ignore the facts of today. English football went through a revolution in the early ‘90s, and the violent hooliganism of yesteryear was mostly replaced by a more family-orientated atmosphere.

In a similar vein, it is simple to look at the violent crime statistics in South Africa and fear for the lives of the traveling supporters. But these problems, while serious, are generally limited to specific areas of the country, and having already hosted several major international sporting events, such as the Rugby Union World Cup and cricket’s Twenty20 Indian Premier League, the South African authorities have shown they know what they are doing.

There will of course be some drunkenness, and some tourists will encounter problems, but by and large the tournament should be relatively peaceful.

Strife:

But whatever happens, it won’t be pain-free. That’s what I love and hate about football. Your team will set your heart racing with anticipation, make you dare to dream with a glimpse of the sort of play that on any given day could beat any team on the planet, and then drop you into a spiral of despair as their challenge comes to a shuddering halt.

Or maybe not. Just once, that dream could come true.

So get ready to put down those books, forget about summer school or internships, and concentrate on something more important for the next month.
Tom Taylor will be headbutting anyone who insults this column. At your own risk, send comments to tom.taylor “at” stanford.edu.

There is a formation in soccer that is not very common. This formation is the 5-3-2. This unique formation is especially popular in Mexico. Ricardo Lavolpe, ex- Mexican National team coach, implemented this formation during the 2006 World Cup. Other current coaches who have implemented this system are Miguel Herrera, Alberto de la Torre, and Ruben Omar Romano. Jesus Ramirez won the 2005 Under-17 World Cup with Mexico using this system.

The main component of this system are the five defenders. Three central defenders are situated in the back. Two wing defenders run up and down the whole width of the field on their respective sides. Critics of this system have argued that this formation takes away from the wing defenders and their ability to defend. They say that they will easily tire from their commitment to attack. Others say that this opens up the width of the field with their speed.

The midfield is formed with three players. There are two attacking midfielders with a holding mid. right behind them. Mexican playmaker Sinha is a great example of how to play in this midfield. He never strays to far from the inside and his laser point vision creates opportunities with the forwards.

The two forwards are essential combined with a quicker, creative player alongside a tall, strong goal scoring strike partner.

This formation for soccer is better suited for higher levels of play. The nuances that go with this system are sometimes hard to understand. Lavolpe, after the 2006 World Cup, went to coach Argentinean powerhouse Boca Juniors. At the time of his signing they were only a few points from obtaining the championship. They went on to lose that championship because the players protested this change in system. He came and change them from their usual positions. Even at a high level this system is complicated but can be fruitful given an adaptation period.

Because of the recent popularity of Apple's mobile computer line I've been reviewing Apple's MacBooks. I'm continuing with the Apple MacBook Pro MA895LLA 15.4″ Laptop. This is one of their higher end products and I'm going to tell you what you can expect to get out of them. I'll discuss where they're impressive and where they fall a little short. I'll also mention who will get the most out of them.

Hardware:

Processor: 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

RAM: 2 GB (DDR2 SDRAM)

Storage Space: 120GB ATA Hard Drive

Optical Drive: Use Apple's Superdrive (CD R / RW integrated DVD +/- R and RW)

Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT (256MB dedicated)

Display: 15.4″ running at 16:9 wide screen aspect.

The screen on this MacBook Pro is excellent, it runs at a resolution of 1440 x 900 and looks very sharp. The screen is matte, meaning that it has no gloss and is very resistant to glare although I personally prefer a glossy screen it seems they handle direct sunlight better. So if you're going to be taking this on the road then I would opt for the glossy version. I like that it has a 16:9 ratio especially if you're planning on doing and intensive image or video editing. This is fully capable of multitasking Photoshop and other background programs. It is also capable of running fairly graphically intensive games.

I like the dedicated video card with it's own dedicated memory. Since it comes from the manufacturer with only 2 GB I would recommend upgrading through a 3rd party if you're going to do much in the way of multimedia work on this notebook.

The notebook itself is relatively light and only a bit over an inch thick. It is not as mobile as some of the 13″ models obviously but has much more to offer hardware wise. This notebook is made of metal and is heat resistant, it also gives it a nice sturdier feel when compared to the non-Pro models.

Connectivity:

2 FireWire (400 and 800, use these to transfer high large video files from your digital camcorder or to transfer data between computers)

2 2.0 USB (use these to connect your notebook with a printer, digital camera, or an MP3 player)

ExpressCard (use this to expand via the addition of PC cards)

DVI port (which supports VGA via included adapter, this is used for connecting to a standard monitor)

1 Ethernet port (use this to connect to a LAN)

Integrated Wireless (Connect to the WiFi)

Integrated Bluetooth

The connectivity is average, although I'd say it is missing a USB port. I like the two speeds of firewire included. There is no card reader which most laptops on the market today include, Apple doesn't seem to enjoy supporting them though, but you can buy a USB card reader (another reason there should be another USB port).

Ultimately this is a fairly powerful notebook and should be used by professionals or gamers. The MA895LL/A of course would serve the student well as well as the casual user, however for the money it would be more notebook than they would really use.

The best location from where you can buy batteries for Dell laptop computers is as you can imagine the Dell website. There you can find a lot of components and accessories for your precious computers. You are able to get the power from Dell whenever you want using the website. To view the most suitable accessories or parts for your specific computer model, you have to enter the service tag, if known. If you don’t know it, select the category in which your computer is included.

You have a large range to select from. Adamo batteries and adapters can be found there, also Alienware batteries, Dell Precision batteries, Inspiron, Latitude, Studio, Vostro and XPS batteries and adapters. It would be better if you could provide the service tag; this could deliver the most accurate offers.

If you only know that your laptop is an Inspiron 1525, then select the Inspiron batteries section. After selecting the Inspiron category, select the model number, in your case 1525. The search will lead you to some results, seven in our situation that provide seven different types of batteries, all made by Dell, tested and validated on Dell laptop computers.

Some of the batteries for this computer are made of 6 Li-Ion cells, others of 9 cells. Besides batteries, you can find adapters too. For example, you can buy an AC adapter 65 Watt 3 Prong with power cord, an auto AC adapter and other adapters created especially for this computer model.

If you are always on-the-go, you don’t need to worry anymore about remaining without power, with the 9 cell battery made for the Inspiron 1525 computer. The battery lets you work seamlessly when you are on-the-go and provides uninterrupted performance. The batteries have one year limited warranty offered by Dell. With all the warranty, you don’t have to behave bad with batteries, meaning that you mustn’t keep the batteries stored for more than 3 months and then expect them to run smoothly, don’t let them in high humidity places, under direct sunlight or on extreme temperatures locations.

Computing power is never far away if you have a Dell laptop computer running on Dell original batteries, that are charged via a 90 Watt AC adapter created to meet the power needs of your Inspiron 1525 computer. This adapter enables you to charge the computer’s battery using a wall outlet.

It is a lightweight and easy-to-carry adapter, being a true friend for you. You can use this device at home, at your office or while you are on-the-go. To simplify things, you can buy one adapter and use it at home and another one to use when you are at the office. No matter what Dell computer you own, when a battery gets out of power, purchase a new and genuine battery and also use original adapters.

The tide has turned! Computer users now realize a high-performance notebook can replace that oversized desktop PC, without sacrificing power, storage and other features you want. Fujitsu sent us the LifeBook N6200 for review purposes, and it's sweet.

After a short while, you find you won't miss the desktop PC at all. The display is sharp, the processing power keeps up with whatever you throw at it, and you have hard disk storage galore.

It's not the lightest notebook (almost 10 pounds), but if you keep it mostly on your desk, who cares? Let's see what's under the hood, for you geeks out there.

The N6200 features the latest Intel Pentium M Processor, which offers desktop-like performance and extended battery life. The latter is important if you're a road warrior. But many buyers of this notebook will use it on AC power most of the time. Our unit had the model 750 (1.86 GHz, with 2 MB L2 cache).

How about the display? You get wonderful image quality with a 17-inch (diagonal) Crystal View display. It's reportedly 40 percent brighter than a standard TFT screen (but we didn't verify this). Fujitsu says the display doubles the standard contrast ratio up to 400:1, so we'll take their word for it. We suffered no eye strain after hours of the N6200 usage.

The video controller is an ATI Mobility Radeon x600 with 128 MB of dedicated video memory. It supports multi-displays, and uses less power. It offers maximum display resolution of 1440×900 and 16 million colors. It supports an external monitor up to 1600×1200 resolution.

Web surfing and networking is a snap. The N6200 notebook comes standard with a modem and LAN. So it's ready to go with dial-up (boo!) or broadband DSL or cable modem. We didn't use either, instead opting for faster Wi-Fi to connect. One of the best things about wireless is that free Wi-Fi networks are popping up all over. We were able to connect to one from home (although connection was spotty at times). But hey, it was free.

The notebook offers a built-in antenna and Intel PRO/Wireless in tri-mode (802.11a/b/g). This simply means three different channels, with b (11 Mbps) and g (a lightning-fast 54 Mbps) the most popular right now. Don't expect those exact speeds, however.

Remember, here are two factors involved with Wi-Fi connections: signal strength and signal quality. You can have excellent signal quality, but if the strength is too low, you won't connect. It's similar to excellent water coming through your pipes, but the water pressure goes down to a drip. You can't fill up a glass that way! The solution to not connecting? Move your laptop around in your home or office, go outside, or down the block. Keep moving until you find a good signal.

Memory options are excellent. Our unit came with 1 GB of memory! But you can upgrade to 2 GB if you want it. At least 512 MB of system memory is required for the TV tuner option, which did come with this unit. The TV tuner not allows you to watch television, you can record programs to the hard drive (like Tivo) or to a DVD. You can also transfer VHS tapes to the notebook, for conversion to DVD. The tuner includes a remote, which you can use without booting up the notebook. The remote also works with DVDs and CDs.

Speaking of DVDs, the note came with Dual-layer DVD+R technology. Why is that good? It provides the ability to record up to 8.5 GB of data (about double the standard DVD's 4.7 GB). So one side of a DVD+R disc will hold up to 4 hours of DVD-quality video or 16 hours of VHS-quality video. Dual-layer discs can be read on DVD players designed for single-layer discs. The drive also reads/writes CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD RAM discs.

If you have experienced tinny sound on a notebook before, forget about it! The N6200 has the best sound quality we've ever heard from a notebook. That's because it has superb stereo speakers and a sub-woofer. While watching TV via the tuner, we were amazed at the sound quality. At times the sound seemed to be coming from external speakers across the room (but they didn't exist).

The notebook has Dolby Headphone too. This is a new signal-processing system that lets you experience authentic surround sound over convention stereo headphones. This is not hype; it really works. With my Panasonic XBS headphones, I was blown away by the sound quality.
When playing multi-channel DVD movies, you hear Virtual 5.1 digital surround sound effects, like you hear in a movie theater.

Some other reviewers have pointed out the awkwardness of the N6200 keyboard. What Fujitsu did was to make the numeric keyboard full-size (rather than the squeezed version you usually get). This caused the QWERTY keyboard to move to the left (a bit off-center). After using it for awhile, we found no problem getting used to it.

Since you are likely to use the N6200 for your full-time PC, go for the best hard drive. This unit came with 200 GB (actually two 100 GB, 4200 rpm drives). So you have a C: and a D: drive.
There are other drive configurations available.

This notebook has more ports than the South Pacific! They include four USB 2.0 ports, an S-Video port, an IEEE 1394 (4 pin), plus headphone, optical digital (SPDIF), audio-out and microphone line-in jacks. You also get one Type I/II PC card slot, media slot (for Memory Stick, Memory Stick PR, Secure Digital (SD) card and xD Picture Card), and one ExpressCard slot. ExpressCards, smaller than PC cards are relatively new. We've never used one, however.

Those who opt for Microsoft Windows XP Professional (XP Home is available) get Norton AntiVirus 2005, Fujitsu HotKey Utility, Intervideo WinDVD4, LifeBook Application Panel, Microsoft Works, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Quicken New User Edition 2005. Microsoft Office Small Business is optional. Depending upon your system's configuration, you get Sonic RecordNow and/or Intervideo WinDVD Creator. With the TV tuner option: InterVideo WinDVR and Fujitsu Instant MyMedia.

The review unit may not be the one with the configurations you want. So all LifeBook notebooks can be ordered exactly as you want it. There's a one-year international limited warranty, three-year international limited warranty on select corporate configurations. And 24/7 tech support and Premium Care service plans are available.

So what's the damage for all this? At the time the review was completed, this particular unit was going for $2399 at www.shopfujitsu.com. That may seem high, but it's not considering what you are getting. You may also call 1-800-FUJITSU for more information.

While thousands of people each year take up jogging to drop unwanted pounds, a new study suggests they'd be better off joining a soccer team. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen, the Copenhagen University Hospital and Bispebjerg Hospital, concluded that soccer players made significantly more fitness gains and lost more fat than runners according to a press release issued by the university.

The study followed 14 men with no previous soccer experience that were between 20 and 40 years of age. Over the course of three months of two to three weekly hour long soccer practices, the participants were regularly tested to determine fitness levels, muscle mass, fat percentage, blood pressure, and balance.

Over the three months, everything that the scientists tested for improved according Peter Krustrup, leader of the study. The participant's fitness levels and muscle mass jumped, while the fat percentage and blood pressure decreased.

Krustrup also looked at a group of runners who trained the same amount of time each week as the soccer players. Although the research indicated an overall improvement in health, the gains from regular running were significantly less than those achieved by the participants who played soccer over the twelve weeks.

Although it is a good practice to run long distances at a consistent moderate speed, the research suggests that soccer is a more beneficial form of exercise for several reasons. Not only was the increase in both fitness rating and muscle mass greater for the soccer players, but the participants that played soccer were the only people to show any improvement during the last eight weeks of the experiment.

At the end of the experiment the soccer players had lost 7.7 pounds (3.5 kilos) of fat and gained 4.4 pounds (2 kilos) of extra muscle mass. These statistics were far better than the jogging group, who gained no muscle, and lost 4.4 pounds (2 kilos) of fat.

However, both groups had improvement in blood pressure, balance, and insulin sensitivity. According to the press release, the scientists believe that the varying paces during a soccer workout, including running, sprinting, and walking, allows soccer players to get more benefits from their workout.

Another added benefit to soccer is that soccer players reported the exercise to be moderate, while the joggers found their practice to be especially difficult. However, both groups exercised at the same overall pace for the hour. In the press release, Krustrup suggested that soccer allowed little time for the participants to examine the difficulty of their workout, while runners felt more isolated, allowing them more time to reflect.

Of course the degree of compression you get depends on the amount of zeroed free space in the image, and the amount by which qcow2 is able to compress the other blocks containing data.

qcow2 uses zlib for compression, so the compression won’t be that spectacular. It’s better to keep the filesystems “sparse” in the first place, by ensuring unused disk blocks are zeroed.

For ext2/3 filesystems, Fedora ships a utility called zerofree, which you can either run inside the guest, or run offline from guestfish. This turns unused filesystem blocks into zeroes, which will make outside compression eg with qcow2 much more efficient. For other filesystems, the usual trick is to create a large file of all zeroes until you fill up the free space, then delete it.

qcow2 files are completely interchangeable with raw disk images:

The Diana Fountain in London's Hyde Park, with the Hyde Park Ibis. The Diana fountain has always seemed to me to be a difficult subject as it is awkward to get a good view of it; really one needs a helicopter, but in the absence of one I took this shot from the bridge across the Serpentine, and it seems to work reasonably well. As you can see it's very popular and it seems to make a better picture when there are people in it. The Ibis was installed in 2009 and there are seats around it. If you wish you can contribute towards the Royal Parks charity by means of slots in the base of this statue. It is also very popular.
