I made some Images in the last weeks - please tell me what you think:

Well I've come to terms with the fact I'm no Denzel Washington… and I'm okay with that. All I really wanted to do was to take some good quality pictures I could use as profile headshots for my internet businesses and for my business cards, brochures, etc. This was important since I had a deadline coming up that I needed pictures for.

Based on my photography needs, I had wondered was there a photographer where the average looking person can go to get reasonably priced, almost “Star Quality” pictures taken. Also, I preferred that they were local too because I wanted a photographer that I could do business with again on future projects. Just imagine my delight when I found out that there was such a photographer located in Oakland at Positive Images Photography.

The owner is Gisele Bonds (no relation to Barry) and she not only consulted with me on the objectives of my project, she also happened to be a pleasure to talk to. She is very knowledgable. She definitely won points when she suggested that I go home to retrieve a few darker outfits to round out my photoshoot after I mistakenly arrived with all lighter colored outfits. She then explained why and how the darker colored outfits could be used to my advantage in the photoshoot.

As we took pictures she instructed me to pose at various angles and again she told me why those angles were important based on the numerous ways we discussed I could to utilize those pictures in my marketing mix. For instance, some of my pictures were taken with my business' branding in mind so that my company's logo or other images could be easily incorporated into those pictures. Nice!

For someone who's camera shy, I can honestly say I did enjoy Gisele's professionalism and creativity. After what felt to me like a thousand pictures and almost an eternity, we finally finished! At that point my mind started thinking, I hope these pictures look okay. I have to admit, I felt a little self-concious about the prospect of seeing the finished product because I have like many people, facial blemishes. When I mentioned this concern to Gisele she said not to worrry the pictures are going to look good.

Gisele invited me to come in and take a look at all the pictures we took and choose the ones I wanted. She gave me some positive feedback that was helpful and then I selected my favorites.

Later, when I received my Picture Disc I was happy to see that she was so right, my pictures did look good and my facial blemishes were gone… at least in my pictures! Interestingly, I'm told her specialty is working with high school aged students. Her studio is filled with with a plethora of graduation and prom pictures, etc.

She mentors students by providing intern opportunities at her studio and one of her past interns who is in college currently, still works at the studio which to me says alot about the kind of person Gisele is. I think that Positive Images Photography is aptly named and if you're looking for high quality photos, Gisele is the person you need to see. You may soon find that your pictures will be worth much more than a thousand words if you do!

My wife and I took the Red Carpet LOTR Tour of New Zealand and it was the best time EVER. Highly recommend taking the tour with these people, they know everyone.

FYI the original Shire set was not completely struck, nor was it maintained - the sheep ranch where the Hobbiton shots were taken was allowed to keep the undressed facades of several hobbit holes after LOTR. Bag End was a bit more than a facade, you could actually sit inside the door and take pictures looking out - it only went into the hill about 6 feet.

Whoever ends up officially directing will have Peter Jackson and the Weta crew behind them and those people are passionate about getting the Hobbit exactly right.

I can't wait to take the tour again during the filing :-)

Golfer Tiger Woods reportedly took a DNA paternity test back in 2002 as a part of a child support battle that proved his mistress, Devon James’ son, Austin James, was not his (photos below). Tiger does not have a love child, at least not with this porn star.

Devon apparently continues to claim her 9 year-old son is Tiger’s. And the kid actually does look a lot like Tiger, which is kind of an explained mystery. The resemblance is uncanny. Coincidence? DNA says YES.

A small cache of Betty White sex photos has reportedly been discovered, according to showbizspy.com.

The four pics allegedly feature Betty, 88, with her late husband Allen Ludden in compromising positions. Ludden died from cancer in 1981, so Betty was in her 50s or younger when the photos were taken.

The Golden Girl reportedly forgot about the images and left them in a box in her old house.  Someone found them and is trying to find a media outlet to buy them.

MovieLessons.com Apple Inc. Chief Executive Steve Jobs took the wraps off a super-slim new laptop at the Macworld trade show on Tuesday, unveiling a personal computer less than an inch thick that turns on the moment it’s opened. Jobs also confirmed the consumer electronics company’s foray into online movie rentals, revealing an alliance with all six major movie studios to offer films over high-speed Internet connections within 30 days after they’re released on DVD. Always a showman, Jobs unwound the string on a standard-sized manila office envelope and slid out the ultra-thin MacBook Air notebook computer to coos and peals of laughter from fans at the conference. At its beefiest, the new computer is 0.76 inches thick; at its thinnest, it’s 0.16 inches, he said. It comes standard with an 80-gigabyte hard drive, with the option of a 64GB flash-based solid state drive as an upgrade. The machine doesn’t come with a built-in optical drive for reading CDs and DVDs, a feature Jobs says consumers won’t miss because they can download movies and music over the Internet and access the optical drives on other PCs and Macs to install new software. They can buy an external drive, however, that will retail for $99. Trading in Apple stock was heavy Tuesday, the first day of the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco. It fell 5.52 percent to $168.91 at midday. The new laptop, which has a 13.3-inch screen and full-sized laptop keyboard, will cost $1799 when it goes on sale in two

The MacBook Air was one Apple laptop that everybody craved for but little people could afford. Until the Dell Adamo was launched on the market, the Apple MacBook Air used to be the thinnest laptop in the world but then Adamo took that title away by producing a thinner and even lighter laptop.

On a more personal level, I can say that I have always been a fan of the design of Apple laptops but I never really found anything so spectacular that could justify the price of this unit. The specs are that much even if the laptop cost more than $1500 when it first appeared on the market and a lot of cool features have been sacrificed in order to get that thin and light unit that everybody wanted to get their hands on.

The Apple laptop reviewed came with a 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM which is not the most spectacular combination in a laptop with a 4 digit price. Aside from that, the graphics card is the integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator which is not going to do you any good if you plan on running some new games or 3D applications. You would expect this Apple laptop to at least come with a lot of hard disk memory but it only has 80 GB of available disk space.

The dimensions of this unit are 12.7 x 8.9 x 0.76 inches and the total weight including the power adapter is 3.4 pounds. The display of the Apple MacBook Air measures 13.3 inches in diagonal and it comes with a native resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and it offers bright images due to its thinness. One of the chapters where you are going to notice a lot of lacks is the ports and connections chapter.

In order to get a thin laptop, Apple has cut some of the most important ports that a laptop must have, leaving us with only 1 USB port, a VGA out, one DVI out and a headphones jack. There is absolutely no optical drive included by my biggest problem is the missing Ethernet port. This means that you can only connect to the internet if you have a wireless connection and a wireless router at home. I’m not very sure what you can so with only 1 USB port either. It is going to take a lot of swapping and pulling out one USB device to insert another and so forth.

Since this laptop seems to lack a lot of important stuff, we can at least hope to get decent performance from the battery included. One major disappointment was the lack of the user replaceable battery. When using the Apple MacBook Air for different functions like installing software, video playback and surfing the internet, the laptop managed to stay on for 4 hours of laptop use which is quite a decent performance. However, the new Dell Adamo can have its batteries changes and since they are so light, you can buy as many as you like and carry them all around to basically have unlimited battery performance.

A Product Review of the 14.1″ Sony VAIO VGN-CR420E/N Laptop

Sony is one of the top selling notebook manufacturers in the market today. With notebooks out pacing desktop sales the mid range notebook is a highly competitive market. The economy is slowing and we're seeing stiff competition for consumers. It may be the time to strike but which notebook is right for you? I've got my hands on the Sony VAIO VGN-FZ240N/B 15.4″ Laptop and I'm going to let you know what its load with and what you can expect out of it. I'll start with some of the basics.

Hardware:

Imaging: Integrated Web Cam

Display: 15.4″ LCD

Processor: 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7250

Storage: 250 GB hard drive (Serial ATA)

RAM: 2 GB RAM (expandable up to 4GB of RAM)

Optical Drive: A CD R/RW with integrated DVD +/- R RW dual layer DVD burner

OS: Windows Vista Business

Weight: 5.75 lbs

This is a good midrange entry from Sony. I like that the body is made of a Magnesium alloy, it really feels sturdy to the touch and stays very cool. It is fairly light weight for a 15″ notebook and has a good low profile. The battery life however seems to be about average.

The good news though is that it is a fairly powerful notebook. The 2.0ghz T7250 is a great processor and enables the user to do a great deal of multitasking. The video card is integrated and derives it's video memory from the system memory, so the 2GB of RAM gets a little stretched. You'll be able to play medium intensity games, but don't expect to crank up the graphics to 11 and see smooth rendering. Though since it is a mid range notebook I hope that no one intends on doing that anyway.

The storage space is good, you can get about as many songs and movies as I would expect you would need at one time on the 250GB drive. That being said I would immediately clear out much of Sony's preinstalled trial ware. Much of it runs in the system tray or background and slows things down. Many of the programs don't even offer much that isn't already included in Windows Vista to begin with. It is just a nuisance and Sony is notorious for it.

Connectivity:

3 2.0 USB (use these to connect your digital camera, iPod, or printer)

1 FireWire (to connect to a digital camcorder and download your digital home movies)

1 VGA output (output to a standard monitor)

1 S-Video (output to a projector or supported TV)

ExpressCard

Memory Stick and SD card slots

Integrated WiFi

Integrated Blue tooth

Ethernet Port

Modem Port

The connectivity is standard and I see everything I expected. I think that it is clear that Sony was designing a very mobile device but trying to inject a little more power. I think they've succeeded; this notebook remains mobile but has a great processor and large hard drive. This is almost the perfect notebook. This price is a little high but that's how Sony rolls. Unlike Apple however Sony will occasionally issue price reductions, so I would keep an eye on this one and look for it to dip in the summer when the market slows and the stimulus checks start to roll in.

By Problem Partner Kristin Samuelson | The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on Friday that Hewlett Packard is recalling 54,000 lithium-ion batteries used in HP and Compaq laptops, according to a May 21 CPSC press release. This is in addition to the 70,000 lithium-ion batteries HP recalled on May 19, 2009. The laptop batteries can pose fire and burn hazards if they overheat.

"Since the
May 2009 recall, HP has received 38 additional reports of batteries
that overheated and ruptured resulting in 11 instances of minor
personal injury and 31 instances of minor property damage," the press release said.

The bad news is, if you have a Hewlett Packard laptop, your battery might have been recalled and you're currently at risk of these hazards. The good news? If you have an affected battery, HP will provide you with a free replacement battery.

The recalled batteries were distributed in certain model numbers (see below for the full list), but that does not mean your battery has been recalled. You can check whether or not your battery has been recalled by visiting HP's website here to validate your battery number.

To locate your notebook model number, check the service tag on the underside of your laptop. If you need help finding your product number, see the HP-provided diagram below:

HP Pavilion DV9000z Laptop Review – Laptop Computer Review

There are many good producers of laptops in the world, and HP is among the best ones. The full name of this company is Hewlett Packard, and it was founded many years ago, back in 1939, in Palo Alto, California, United States   of America. Its founders were Bill Hewlett and David Packard, so now you know where the name comes from. Today the company still has the headquarters in Palo   Alto, but it operates in many other countries all over the world. It had expanded so much that these days it is the largest information technology company in the world and also the best vendor of personal computers in the world. It is present in almost each country, and has around 310,000 employees. It makes billions of dollars of profit each year, so you can definitely trust this brand when buying a HP product.

And speaking of products, there are many products made or sold by this company, such as: Computer Monitors, Digital Cameras, Enterprise Software, Indigo Digital Press, Mobile Phones, Networking, Personal Computers and Laptops, Personal Digital Assistants, Printers, Scanners, Servers, Storage, Televisions and others. Since the company is so developed and present all over the world, you can buy the HP products from many stores. One of them, that offers some of the best prices on HP laptops is Best Buy. This is a major retail store from the United States of   America (and some other countries) that sells all sorts of electronic devices, including notebooks.

You can find 25 different models of HP laptops on the site of Best Buy, with prices ranging from 400 dollars for the cheapest model to 1,799 dollars for the most expensive one. For today we won’t discuss about a really expensive laptop, and not about a really cheap one…we’ll chose one from the middle. Let’s choose for example the HP - Pavilion Laptop with Intel ® Core ™ i3 Processor – Black, Model: dv 4-2155 dx | SKU: 9707468 which has a price of 749 dollars. So this is not a really powerful high end laptop, but is not a cheap and weak one either. It is a good laptop, one that offers good features for most of the users.

Its processor is a Intel ® Core ™ i3-330 M processor that features a 3 MB L3 cache and 2.13 GHz processor speed. The RAM memory is very good too, offering you 4 GB DDR 3 memory for multitasking power, that can be expandable to 8GB. The optical drive is quite good too and it is a multiformat DVD ± RW/ CD-RW drive with double layer support, that can record up to 8.5 GB of data. The display screen of this laptop is a 14.1″ WXGA high definition widescreen display with BrightView technology and a 1280 x 800 resolution. So the video quality will be quite good, and you can even play complex video games or watch movies in High Definition on this laptop.

Its hard drive offers plenty of free space for most of the simple home users, and it has 320 GB of disc space (7200 rpm). The graphics engine is an Intel® HD graphics that features up to 1696 MB total available video memory for lush images. And this laptop even has a HDMI port, so in case you are not happy with the 14 inch screen, you can connect it to a large High Definition TV, and watch movies at a better quality. And like most of the other laptops made these days it also has a built in webcam, a 5 in 1 media reader (that supports Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO and xD-Picture Card formats) and both wireless and Ethernet connectivity for easy access to the internet. Besides the HDMI port that we mentioned before it also has most of the ports you might need, including 2 USB ports, audio ports, a VGA port and others. It is quite a portable laptop, with a weight of 5.2 lbs and it measures 1.6 inch thin. Its battery can last for about 3 hours and 30 minutes which is good, and it even comes with an installed version of the Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64 bit. And of course it’s also Energy Star Qualified.

So after all it is a really good laptop, one that can be included at the “premium laptops” category, and it is not so expensive either. So if you want to find the best price on a HP laptop, just make a visit to the closest Best Buy store (or visit the Best Buy’s website).

Interchangeable Magnetic Photo Cube You Make in Minutes

I was photographing in the last couple of days - please tell me your thoughts:

~ on the run ~ by Janey Kay

The picture is striking. It's a snapshot-like photo of an orange Mini Cooper, cruising through the rubble after an Israeli attack, occupants women dressed in black and white attire, formal in appearance. One is holding a handkerchief over her face, as if offended by the odor of the area. Spencer Platt's picture has been published in media worldwide, and won first prize in the prestigious World Press Photo awards. Rather than just representing the struggle of war, however, it has caused controversy wherever it has been shown.

There is a lot more to the story of the photo than the reaction it first gives. That may be one of the reasons that it won, because it reveals that there is a lot more to a war story than impressions can give. Spencer Platt has won numerous awards for his war photography, and it may be that his insight led him to take this incongruous picture.

Looking at the photo on the BBC website, the impression is simple, rich vs. poor. Victim versus worldly wealth. But, it turns out, the people in the car are mostly residents of the bombed-out area. It's not even their car, and the car is no rich person's toy - it has been running medication and supplies to refugees. The photograph draws you in to be further informed about the nature of war in Lebanon.

Beirut is sometimes known as “The Paris of the Middle East,” and even in wartime people are style conscious, as these women show. After the civil war, the city was rebuilding, recreating a center of style and fashion, of shopping and nightlife, as discussed on planetizen.com. Now, it is silent again, and rubble spreads.

The people of Lebanon are nothing if not resilient, and that is one thing the photograph portrays clearly. Even those in the neighborhood who saw the car drive by are heard in a video taken by the women shouting comments, and the women felt compelled to reply “we live here.”

Some photographers, according to the BBC, have commented with disdain on the photograph, comparing it to a mere snapshot. Reactions to the photo show that it is clearly more than that, even if it is not what it seems. It is a litmus test of perceptions and preconceptions of readers and viewers, and also of editors - a Dutch newspaper gave it the heading “The cool people VS Hezbollah.” In this case, the photograph reveals not only a scene from a war, but the minds of the people who look at photographs about the world's wars.

Photographs from the contest in which the photograph took first prize will be part of an exhibition beginning in April.

After a week full of clickjacking attacks, we're seeing other dodgy links being spread widely between Facebook users who should perhaps know better.

One that I have seen crop up a lot, is appearing in the status updates of Facebook users with phrases like:

This horrific photo forced photographer to kill himself! http://tinyurl.com/VerySadPhoto

and

This horrific photo forced photographer to kill himself! http://tinyurl.com/HorriblePic

Clicking on links like these can take you to Facebook pages which names such as “Man Commits Suicide 3 Days After Taking This Photo”.

These Facebook pages force you to first “Like” them and then republish the link on your own Facebook page (advertising it to your online friends) before you eventually get to see the photograph.

Just ask yourself this - do you really want to recommend a page to your friends, before you know what lies behind it? For all you know, you could be passing on a link which will ultimately take your online pals to a phishing page or malware.

As it happens, the pages are lying in any case.

The photograph - of an emaciated young girl in Sudan - was taken in March 1993 by prize-winning South African photo-journalist Kevin Carter. Carter did kill himself - but it was over a year later in South Africa, not three days after the photo was taken as claimed by the Facebook links.

You can probably imagine, however, that people would easily agree to publish the link to all their friends - in their morbid interest to see the photo - and thus help it spread quickly.

In fact, it's no surprise that links like these are spreading so quickly and virally across Facebook, when popular pages such as “I like your makeup…LOL JK, it looks like you got gangbanged by Crayola” (currently 1.7 million fans and counting) have republished it to all of their followers.

Sigh.. If only you had to take the equivalent of a driving test before you were allowed to run a Facebook page with that many followers. Just imagine the harm they could do by posting a stupid or malicious link..

So, what's the purpose of these pages about the horrific photograph? Well, if we want to give the creators of these pages the benefit of the doubt, it's possible that they have created them out of curiousity - to see how many people they could trick into “Like”ing their page.

But I suspect there's more to it than that. My feeling is that once a page like this has managed to gather a large enough following, it could be abused for the purposes of spamming, spreading malware and stealing identities.

So you really should take much more care over which pages you agree to “Like” on Facebook. Remember, you should never be bullied into publicising a Facebook page before they have shown you the content you are interested in. After all, if you like what you see, you'll only be too happy to share it with your friends, right?

If you have been unfortunate enough to have been ensnared by this latest nuisance, do the following:

  • Remove the update from your newsfeed (so your friends will no longer click on it)
  • Enter Edit profile/Likes and interests and remove the “Man Commits Suicide 3 Days After Taking This Photo” page from your list of Pages you like (you may have to click on “Show other Pages”)
  • Go to “Privacy Settings” and edit your settings for “Applications and websites” in order to check that you have not inadvertently added any unwanted applications.

Finally, if you're a regular user of Facebook, be sure to join the Sophos page on Facebook to be kept informed of the latest security threats.

A Product Review of the Best Selling 15.4″ Toshiba Satellite A215-S5857 Laptop

Toshiba launch by Axel Bührmann

Samsung R522-Aura Anjou 39

Budget level laptops are outselling many of the more expensive options the manufactures are offering these days. This can be attributed partly because of the slowing economy and partly because hardware manufactures like Intel are producing more and more powerful processors at an inexpensive price making more powerful budget notebooks. The Toshiba Satellite A205-S5841 15.4″ Laptop falls into this budget notebook category and I've gotten my hands on one. In this review I'm going to let you know what you can expect out of it and if it is worth your money. Let's begin with the basics.

Hardware:

Operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium

Display: 15.4″ LCD

Processor: 1.73 GHz Intel Pentium T2370 dual-core

Storage: 160GB

RAM: 2GB of RAM (cannot be expanded)

Optical Drive: an integrated CD burner R/RW with dual layer DVD +/- R RW burner

Video Card: An Integrated Intel GMA X3100 (which steals 256mb of system ram to use)

This budget Toshiba comes in their current trend color onyx blue. The screen is great, and glossy. This Toshiba is fairly mobile and isn't too bulky. It is made from the same “shell” as their more expensive offerings. The differences here clearly start with the motherboard. This notebook comes loaded with 2 GB of ram which is fine for this level of notebook, however it isn't expandable. So if you plan to use this laptop for a long period of time, you won't be able to upgrade the RAM down the road, just something to keep in mind. Also the processor is only a 1.73 which does just fine for the majority of applications but don't expect to play any graphically intensive games. The video card seals the deal with the gaming limitations. It is integrated and shares its memory with the system RAM.

The battery life is average on this notebook and the hard drive actually has a good amount of space for what this notebook is being designed for. Lets get to the connectivity.

Connectivity:

Integrated WiFi (to connect to wireless networks)

4 2.0 USB ports (to connect your iPod, digital camera, printer or whatever else you may have)

1 FireWire (connect your notebook to another PC or to transfer digital video from your camcorder)

1 VGA (use this to connect to computer monitors)

1 S-Video (this can connect to some TV's but it is mostly for connecting your notebook with projectors)

1 audio out / mic in (self explanatory)

ExpressCard (for connecting things like a Bluetooth adaptors, which you'll need to buy since this notebook isn't integrated with it)

It has a good amount of connectivity for a “budget” notebook. I like that it has 4 USB ports, which is 1 more than standard. I do wish it had integrated Bluetooth. You may want to invest in an external Bluetooth module to add on if you decide to purchase this notebook. With that you'll be able to use Bluetooth enabled peripherals like mice and keyboards (wirelessly) as well as being able to sync with your phone.

Although I have been critical of it for $600 this is a great notebook. It will please just about any casual user. It will do plenty of work on the road and download plenty of songs to listen to and movies to watch. The only things it won't really do are graphic editing and intensive gaming. Watch for this one to drop pretty low when things slow down in the summer. If it does I would hop on it.

This tiny system is part of a new crop of ultraportable's that use LED backlighting in order to get great display performance while maintaining a long battery life. That is the main technological achievement of the system but it is by no means all it has going for it. The P7230 is built on an ultra mobile platform that includes an Intel Core Solo U1400 processor, an optical drive, and a 10.6" display. This smaller format factor allows for a very light weight and great portability but limits the power of the system as well as aspects that affect usability, like the size of the keyboard.

Fujitsu LifeBook LH520 Laptop with AMD Platform and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5430

The Fujitsu LifeBook LH520 powered by 2.1GHz AMD Athlon II Dual-Core P320 processor, 2GB of RAM, up to 500GB of HDD, a 14-inch HD back-light LED display with resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5430 dedicated graphics card with 512MB VRAM. Fujitsu LifeBook LH520 also comes with Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth v2.1+EDR, three USB ports, DVD burner, LAN, VGA Out, Secured Digital / SDHC/ Memory Stick /Memory Stick PRO, Up to 3hrs (6-cell battery) and Genuine Windows 7 64-bit operating system.

I got a Fujitsu laptop with Intel 2 duo core processor, 3 G memory, built in web cam, spill proof keyboard, drop shock sensor/preventive (whatever it’s called) and some other stuff. Is this a good product. It seems really well made and it has some other cool stuff. I don’t know much about this company except that it is obviously Japanese. It has the same features as the Toshiba I was looking at, but it had better graphics and screen/color.

Flip Video Camcorder bei Amazon

Contrary to all the late night infomercials, size really doesn't matter, especially when talking about the Acer Aspire One series of netbooks. Compact, yet powerful, an Acer can do just about anything the big laptops can do, without putting a strain on your budget or your back.

Acer Netbooks Available with 8.9 or 10.1 Inch Displays

Before my contract ended at my last employer, my supervisor wanted everyone on the team to lug their desktops down to one conference room, which he affectionately designated as “The War Room.”

Instead of loading a tower and a 17-inch monitor onto my chair and wheeling the whole system downstairs, I simply grabbed my Acer 8.9-inch netbook and walked down to the conference room.

After connecting to the company network via the built-in Ethernet port, I was able to access my desktop remotely and perform all the duties necessary to complete the task at hand. Over the course of the next 12 hours, my disbelieving supervisor kept criticizing my netbook, wondering how I could get anything done on that tiny screen. At the end of the day, he finally conceded that the Acer Aspire One had a very clear screen and could handle the workload.

For business applications like mine, the 8.9-inch screen is okay, but the 10.1-inch Acer Aspire One might have kept my boss off my back for most of the day.

Acer Aspire One Features

Efficiency is the watchword with the Acer Aspire One, which has an array of features that include the following:

Three USB ports. This makes it easy to connect a USB mouse or a couple of flash drives.

160 GB hard drive. My Acer came equipped with a robust 160 GB hard drive, but some models have a more modest 120 GB drive.

3 or 6-cell batteries. On a full charge, a 3-cell battery can keep the netbook running for up to 3 hours, but the 6-cell battery will let the Acer Aspire One run as long as 7 hours, depending on what kinds of applications you are running.

1 GB RAM. A bit conservative on the memory, the Aspire One typically comes with 1 GB of RAM, which can be upgraded to 1.5 with an optional memory card.

Multimedia slots. This netbook can handle different kinds of external memory storage, including SD cards and some memory sticks.

Wireless connectivity. The Acer connects effortlessly to wireless hot spots. I use it at home to connect to my personal wireless router.

The Acer Aspire One: Perfect for Road Warriors

For the last couple of years, I covered the comic book convention circuit, attending such events as the San Diego Comic-Con and Wonder-Con. With so many people in attendance, though, it definitely was difficult to carry a full-sized laptop with a 17-inch screen from conference room to conference room.

The Acer Aspire One, on the other hand, was fairly easy to balance on my lap or position on a small table. I was able to connect to a wireless network and upload stories to the Associated Content website without much effort.

Where/How to Buy an Acer

Over the last few months, I noticed that most electronics vendors, in particular Radio Shack and Comp USA, have jumped into the netbook pool with both feet. Radio Shack does offer some good deals on the Acer Aspire One if you also sign up for two years of AT&T wireless network service. Comp USA offers similar models for a few hundred dollars, but these are refurbished netbooks.

“nice little thingy – but it ain’t a mac” 2010-03-24
By Honda (earth)
paid < $350 from b&h.

pros: xp home (not win7 starter), small, light (compared to regular laptops, even 12″), decent screen, keys (not keyboard) feel nice and responsive (not rickety clickety things)

cons: keyboard feels a touch cramped, touchpad is kinda small (not sure how it could be bigger), and over sensitive at times (but configurable – somewhat), actual desktop (w/icons) display *after* boot+login in is almost as long as boot up

i’m a pro photographer traveling abroad for the first time with pro equipment and need storage/backup for digifiles. i decided against those stand-alone storage drives for the same or more money as a netbook. i’m willing to accept a larger device (netbook) to have more functionality (web, documents, etc.) with a larger footprint over a single function storage drive with a much smaller footprint. heck, i’m even gonna pick up a $80 usb powered drive as double backup for the road. if i wanted double backup with a stand-alone storage drive, i would be spending $800 or more. this way i’m still under $450.

i’ve wanted a netbook since before they were widely available. i would buy a mac netbook for $600 if they offered one, but pcs are the only thing going at this size. i’ve waited and waited for apple to respond and they haven’t. i saw a review that said that macbook air is apple’s netbook. right. it’s far too expensive and far too big to compete in the netbook market. … oh, there is the ipad – just an oversized itouch/iphone. 64GB max? no hdd? no usb port? no thank you.

anyhoo, it’s a nice little box anyways. wireless networks should be simplicity these days. this unit won’t accept a dhcp address automatically from my wireless router so i have to config it manually. rrrr.. got it working without too many hours down the drain. then i tried samsung’s “easy network manager” (enm). after setting up a home and work location, it decided to stop recognizing my available wireless router. saw all the others in my building except mine. rrrr… tinkered with the router and the network is back again – all has the same basic config, but i’m not using the “enm” to mangle my network settings any more.. apple’s network manager is clean and intuitive by comparison.

i’m not listing the wireless config probs i had as a “con” because i’m chalking it up to pilot error (all except for that beknighted samsung enm). (see edit below)

the form factor and design is not super great, but like the subject says, it ain’t a mac.

top cover is glossy: i guess i will have to be satisfied with a scratch and smudge magnet. i might consider taking super fine steel wool to the cover to “matte” it down.

glossy screen: i have yet to meet anyone that actually likes them, but glossy is the only thing going these days. no steel wool to this sensitive device.

vga out? how quaint! what century are we talking about here? *all* new output devices accept dvi or hdmi. no laptops seem to understand this. gimme a mac.

sd port? cool! but most pro cameras use cf cards, tho my 1d’s all have dual cf and sd slots, i only use the sd card as reserve. +1 point for this pc laptop – no mac has a sd slot.

6-cell slide out batt? very cool! slide the thing out and swap in another .. for ~$75, that’s not too bad of an idea. again, mac might start taking notes here.

9.5 hour batt life? i have had it at work for 9+ hours, used it for music/email/ftp/etc. not super hard duty and got 8+ hours out of it. i don’t even bring the charger with me. that’s not too shabby. will have a better idea after my trip mac??

no native raw file built-in? sweet lord.. mac’s had this for *years*. got me a good solution on this, but c’mon..

EDIT 3/30: still pretty happy with this box

the wireless network connection was definitely pilot error. i made a couple quick mods to the wireless router and now it connects via dhcp just fine in at home and work. gotta try some other locations. other info: i can connect to my mac from xp no problem. not the reverse. it looks like xp home doesn’t want you to use the box as a ’server’. researched this backwards and forwards and still cannot find an answer. ok, so i always upload pix from the pc to the mac- not the end of the world.

i’ll try to give this an update after my trip..

It's marketing.
Do you know the story of Corona beer?
Originally it was brewed for people who couldn't afford the beer that was out there at the moment.
Then they relaunched there products in other countries at a high end price.
Turning it in a luxury beer, rather then a cheap beer.

Same story with apple computers, Lexus for cars, Hugo Boss with fragrances.
People don't have a sense of reality. Simple primal instinct.
Men want lots of stuff. Woman want men with lots of stuff.

If people could really achieve objectiveness, we would buy cars that only had the necessary and not a Ferrari.
We would buy a 5$ sweat suits, instead of brands. Because those 5$ would simply keep us warm, thus makes more sense.
We wouldn't buy huge houses, but just big enough for our needs.
We wouldn't fight wars over our indifferences, instead we would realize we are all on this planet together.
And we have to some how make it work.

On the other hand we would be extinct. We wouldn't reproduce.
Why make a child, if it is just going to die in 90 years.
Why live a life without any real purpose or heading.
If we didn't want, we wouldn't be here to not want.

Apple Netbook Claim Chowder

Two days ago, Apple announced its financial results for the quarter ended September 26. The company sold 3 million Macs, of which 2.3 million were laptops, and booked $1.67 billion in profit. Not one of those 2.3 million laptops was a “netbook”.

14 October 2008, Doug Aamoth at CrunchGear: “Five Reasons Why an Apple Netbook Is a No-Brainer”:

When asked today about the possibility of an Apple netbook, Steve
Jobs said something to the effect of, “The market is just
getting started — we’ll see how it goes.”

Huh? Here’s how the netbook market’s going, Steve: pretty much
every major computer company has a netbook but you. Apple’s a
prime candidate for a netbook, too.

20 January 2009, Brian Caulfield at Forbes: “Apple’s Real Problem: Netbooks:

The real problem is how Apple’s portfolio of expensive gear
— particularly notebooks — will fare as the recession
starts to bite.

21 January 2009, Brian X. Chen at Wired Gadget Lab: “Apple Still Oblivious to Netbook Opportunity”. Amazingly, ten months later, they remain equally oblivious.

18 March 2009, Shane O’Neill at PC World: “Recession Breathes Life Into Windows PCs as Apple Gasps for Air”:

At this point, I’m going to stop asking when Apple will
acknowledge these dark days we live in because I think the answer
is never. Maybe Apple should just be a bull market company. When
times are lean, it should pack up like a traveling carnival or
disappear like a baseball team in winter and not come back until
everybody’s rich and happy again.

24 March 2009, Scott Moritz at TheStreet.com: “Apple’s Netbook Foray Will Flop”

Nonetheless, design hubris and slumping sales will cause Apple to
tap a hot segment of computer market.

So Apple will be forced to enter the “netbook” market due to slumping MacBook sales, eh?

19 August 2009, Charles Moore at The Apple Blog: “Lack of Netbook, Price Hurting Apple in This Year’s Back-to-School Market”. That would be the back-to-school period which just ended, with Apple selling 2.3 million laptops at an average price of $1,265.

As Jason Snell put it, imagine how much money Apple could have lost if only it had a netbook.

As the start of the FIFA World Cup™ approaches the coaches of the teams going to Germany this year, find themselves in very similar situations and all facing the same large looming question of whom to take with when they go to play for football soccer’s most coveted prize: bringing the World Cup Trophy home to their fatherland.

However there is one national coach that seems to be unworried: Anibal Ruiz. A Uruguayan by birth, this 50 year-old football trainer is eager to prove to his adopted country that he is a trueborn son by bringing home to Paraguay the prize of all prizes. He is confident that his team will be well prepared after playing their friendly games against Mexico, Norway, Denmark, and Georgia. You can see a determination in his face; instead of the furrow of thought most coaches have on their faces at this time before the tournament. Determination that he is sure will propel his team to do better than the second-round exits that Paraguay has had in the last two World Cup encounters, first in France in '98 and later in Korea/Japan in '02.

Reflecting on his teams draw to meet England in the first round of the Cup, Ruiz again showed his determined face stating, “What is it that every team at this level aspires to? Playing against the very best, that's the only way to prove how good you are. We need to prove ourselves. Paraguay is a big-game side. Obviously, we are aware that England is a great side, but I maintain that it is the best thing that could have happened and the players agree. It's a bonus to be playing them first; it won't allow us a moment's overconfidence. From now until the World Cup kicks off, and during the tournament itself, we need to be totally switched on and focused to avoid making even the slightest error.”

Ruiz has taken not only a very determined view on the upcoming tournament but has also taken a very realistic view and knows exactly what his team should expect in the upcoming tournament and is also very aware of the need of his players to be aware of what is upcoming. Paraguay’s recent friendly match with Wales was according to Ruiz “Extremely positive.” Claiming that more than anything the match gave the team a chance to meet and go over a few things, and remember how important it is that the team is all on the same page. When all the players are all coming from different systems of play from their separate club teams it is important to give them time to adjust to the national team play, and there is no question that Ruiz understands this notion.

Having already decided on 18 of the 23 players on his team Ruiz only has a few more decisions left to make regarding the team. One of those is Rogue Santa Cruz. With his recent injury there is some small question on whether he will be able to paly at a 100 percent or not. However, both Santa Cruz and his doctor are very optimistic about his ability to play in time. Santa Cruz says that he will be ready to play by April 15, which would give him nearly two months of practice before the tournament starts. As for Ruiz, he is satisfied with that date and the confidence that Santa Cruz and his doctor show and is certain that Santa Cruz will be ready in time.

This year one can expect to see a different sort of team from Paraguay, one that is well organized and well coached. Focusing their offensive strategies on width and penetration instead of direct passes—as they have done in the past. If they make it past the first big hurdle in England expect this years team from Paraguay to go far.

Fifa have confirmed that they have found no basis to the allegations made by Lord Triesman concerning a plot to bribe World Cup referees.

Triesman was forced to step down from his posts as chairman of the Football Association and England’s 2018 World Cup bid after a national newspaper published his comments.

He was secretly recorded without his knowledge by a former friend suggesting that Spain could drop its own bid to host the 2018 tournament if Russia helped corrupt officials at this summer’s tournament in South Africa.

England’s bid team immediately moved to distance themselves from the comments and Triesman was swiftly replaced by former FA chairman Geoff Thompson.

World football’s governing body launched an investigation into the comments, headed by Ethics Committee chairman Claudio Sulser, and found that they were without foundation.

A statement from Fifa read: “Following the publication of these reports, the Fifa Ethics Committee asked Lord Triesman and the Football Association to provide their comments on the matter.

“According to the statements received by Fifa from both parties, Lord Triesman commented on “speculation circulating among journalists in Europe about conspiracies around the world” in a private conversation with a friend that was taped – unbeknown to him – and then passed to a UK newspaper.

Speculation

“In his letter to Fifa, Lord Triesman explained that this speculation was not an allegation on his part but was reported to him in a private capacity and was not known by either the Football Association or the England 2018 Fifa World Cup Bid Committee. This was confirmed by the Football Association.

“Lord Triesman added that the speculation expressed does not reflect his view or that of the Football Association or the England 2018 Fifa World Cup Bid Committee, and that the comments reproduced in the UK newspaper were never intended to be taken seriously.

“By means of letters sent to Fifa and to the football associations of Spain and Russia, the Football Association and the England 2018 Fifa World Cup Bid Committee have unreservedly apologised for and expressed their “bitter regret” at the declarations made by Lord Triesman in his private capacity.

“In addition, Fifa has been in contact with the Russian FA and the Spanish FA and received correspondence from both associations on this matter. Fifa has also examined all of the information received from various sources. Following this thorough investigation, Fifa has found no indication that there is any basis to the allegations reported by Lord Triesman.

“In the light of the above-mentioned circumstances, the chairman of the Fifa Ethics Committee has decided not to pursue this matter any further.

“However, he emphasised that it is essential to the integrity, image and reputation of Fifa and the competitions that the conduct of the member associations and the bid committees during their bid preparations complies with the highest standards of ethical behaviour.

“The Fifa Ethics Committee will remain vigilant to ensure that ethical conduct and fair play is respected in the bidding for the 2018 and 2022 Fifa World Cups.”

FIFA's Facebook Game Launches, Threatens Productivity

Having only been revealed by EA a couple of weeks ago, Playfish's FIFA Superstars game has gone live on Facebook. And I must say, it's rather good.

Not good in the way a real FIFA game is. But good in the way a Facebook game - built for football fans, not farming fans - should be.

At its core, Superstars is a football management game. If you start at Football Manager, work your way down to FIFA Manager, then strip most of that away, you're getting close. You build a team, you get some players, you set training regimes then you set them loose on other teams, a game's outcome determined not by arcade skills, but by behind-the-scenes number crunching and statistical combat.

While the depth of the game is limited, the key appeal comes in the fact it's free to play, makes Facebook integration a big part of the action and has some slick presentation that's neither too “hardcore” to put off the casual user, nor too cutesy to put off fans of the “real” FIFA series.

From what I've seen having picked at its edges all day, benefits will of course be had by those willing to pay a little extra to get better players, but provided you've got enough friends playing the game there's enough for free-riding players to do that unless you want to be really competitive you won't need to pay a cent.

What I really like, though, is how the game asks you each and every time you win a match whether you want to tell Facebook about a win or accomplishment or not. I've been playing all day, and said no every time, leaving my friends in abject peace.

That said, I'm a considerate human being. A dickhead who likes to boast about every single win may soon try your patience. But then, that may be more of a problem with your friends list than it is with the game…

On a related note, FIFA Online, EA's more skill-based attempt at luring you away from a day's work, has also gone into open beta today. You can check it out here.

Some of the writers from TVHE have grouped together with other football fans to write a football blog.  The current focus of this blog is on the 2010 Fifa World Cup.  It can be found here:

http://vuvuzelaventing.wordpress.com/

On the blog they go through their views on the different World Cup groups, and who they think will end up taking out the cup.  All very interesting.  I suggest you go along and have a look – they currently have posts up for groups A, B, and C.

Go the All Whites

The buzz has been growing and growing, and just in time for the World Cup of Soccer, Playfish and FIFA have launched their new FIFA Superstars game on Facebook, and it’s good. The game is a soccer management game, and doesn’t have any live gameplay yet, but the simulation mode looks fantastic and the game uses the FIFA license to include every real soccer player and team you can imagine. If you enjoy soccer, you’ve got to give this one a shot.

The game revolves around choosing players for your team, developing a strategy and then engaging other teams in ‘league matches’ or in tournaments. The game starts by asking you to conquer the Junior C league by playing a series of matches against other teams. The main strategic element a player will encounter is ensuring that their strategies and roster are set up to properly defeat the other team’s strategies.

Once you launch into a game, you see a play by play of the key plays of the game. These plays are acted out in full quality graphics and look fantastic. There aren’t too many animations yet, but as with all social games we can expect that to grow as the game succeeds.

Once you win a game, you gain experience and gold, which you can use to buy ‘transfers’ that give you a set of great players. The feel of buying a transfer is that of buying a pack of cards: you’re not sure what you’re going to get but you know that if you buy the ’silver’ set rather than the bronze, you’ll get better players. You can also use gold to buy coaches and upgrade your stadium.

Per the match consideration, a player only can play a certain amount of matches per day. If you want to accelerate faster, you need to buy Playfish Cash to get more matches.

There’s more to the game, and we’ll have a full review soon, but for now, give the game a shot!

Product Review: Microsoft Notebook Cooling Base

TOSHIBA-P300-LAPTOP-KEYBOARD-US by supply.notebookpart

Epson Laser Drucker kaufen

I have an older model Dell laptop computer that gets really hot. Sometimes it becomes so hot to the touch that I cannot have it on my lap for fear of burning my skin. This heat really defeats the purpose and function of a notebook or laptop computer.

Since I did not want to invest money to purchase a newer computer, I decided to look into inexpensive cooling options. My purchase: Microsoft's slick new Notebook Cooling Base in hot pink.

Notebook Cooling Base Specifications
The contoured cooling base is powered via a USB cable that you connect to your notebook or laptop computer. This cable makes the cooling base very portable, and I like not dealing with AC adapters or batteries. The device cools your computer via a single fan and an efficient cooling channel to draw the heat away.

The unit is very lightweight and thin. You can place your laptop or notebook computer directly onto the cooling base and set it on your lap to work without fear of overheating. Optionally, you can flip down the desk stand if you want to use the unit on a surface other than your lap. The top surface has 2 grippers so that your computer will not shift around. The unit base is black and contains the desk stand and 2 grippers.

Width: about 11.4 inches
Length: about 11.4 inches

Does the Notebook Cooling Base Work?
I was pleasantly surprised to find that Microsoft has created a cooling base that does work on my old laptop reliably. I have tested it over several weeks and multiple hours per day without a single heat-related crash. Before I used the cooling base, my laptop would crash due to heat at least once per day.

I highly recommend this cooling base for your notebook or laptop computer, particularly if you have an older model that is prone to overheating. It is comfortable, inexpensive, and very portable. I do not even hear the fan running so noise is not an issue with this device.

I tested my husband's MacBook on my new hot pink cooling base. Although he is not wild for my color choice, we did find that it could work for the MacBook. The MacBook is slightly wider than the base so it did overhang on each side. Although the MacBook does not suffer from a heating issue, the base was comfortable to use in both the lap and desktop positions.

Where to Purchase Microsoft's Notebook Cooling Base
I purchased my base at a local Target store for $24.99. I had a choice of a few different colors including black, silver, white, and pink. If your local Target store does not carry the notebook cooling base, you can preorder it from Amazon.com for $29.99 or search for a local retailer using your zip code on Microsoft's Hardware website.

Customer Reviews:

It’s nice however
Beware that this Sony Vaio DOES NOT HAVE the HDMI port as it’s advertised on the pictures.

it’s not a big issue for me for I woudn’t use it anyway. However if you want this feature it might be a problem.

Nice budget computer
The keyboard on this notebook is the highlight, it has great feedback, separated chicklet keys, and has standard key placement (unlike some funky keyboards I have tried recently). That is to say, delete in top right, escape top left and CTL bottom left, with arrow keys on the bottom right. Also, it doesn’t have the rarely needed numeric keypad, which is found on a lot of keyboards these days but requires your hand placement left of expected to type, which is what you do most of the time anyhow, right? I like this keyboard better than those on the legendary Thinkpads of old.

The screen is nice and sharp, I don’t dislike the shiny screen as much as I had originally expected. Colors are great.

Hard drive has enough space for me, and the recovery procedure works well. I made the recovery CDs as well, but I normally just clone the HD onto and old drive to have a backup that way.

The computer has nice selection of features, minus the HDMI that has been mentioned already.

I am very fond of the trackpad .. I grew up with IBMs and prefer the pointer stick, but this is the nicest trackpad I’ve ever used. Buttons are in the right places and are the right size.

Speakers are OK, better than many budget laptops. The recessed keyboard is a nice looking design and the textured case is also quite cool looking. This certainly doesn’t look like a budget laptop.

There are a few negatives however. First, Sony loads a ridiculous amount of “junkware” on this computer. Trial versions of this and that, utilities of dubious importance, and a bunch of other junk I see no need for. I took me about 45 minutes to get rid most of the egregious stuff. The processor is 64 bit, and the Win7 version is 64 bit, which makes sense given the 4GB ram installed. The processor does not have the Intel virtualization technology, but frankly having used Sun’s free and excellent Virtual Box software for some time, which doesn’t need this virtualization technology, I see no need for Intel’s hardware virtualization.

Also, the computer ain’t a light weight although it isn’t a complete pig either.

I also installed XP Professional for giggles, the drivers are all available on Sony’s site. Man, it really flies with 32 bit XP.

All in all a very nice budget laptop.

If it was a woman it would be Eva Mendes.
This is my first laptop so the whole Laptop thing is new to me. When it arrived via skybox to trinidad, it was well protected so came undamaged considering the distance it travelled. You have to make your own back-up DVDs, then move around the masses of junk on the hard drive to remove what you don’t want. 320GB is really 286GB. A case is also not provided. The feel of the keyboard is great though. Battery life is max 2 hours not the upto 4 hours as stated. HDMI does not have a port. Overall, its well worth the money,a very stylish, powerful, sexy machine with everything I was looking for in a Laptop. Can’t wait to show it off when travelling.

With so many world-class players, selecting a World Soccer Team of the Decade for 2000-2010 is almost an impossible job. The debate could go on endlessly and there is no true perfect format for selecting players. This list uses a combination format by choosing from attributes such as club team play, national team play, longevity, statistics, and technique. In addition to the starting 11 players, there are 7 substitute selections to make a full squad of 18 players.

Starting Team: (4-2-2-2 formation)

Goalkeeper

Gianluigi Buffon (Italy, Juventus)

The least controversial choice of the whole team, Buffon is easily the best goalkeeper of the decade and the modern soccer generation. A very smooth net minder, Buffon won 4 Italian league championships, or scudettos, with Juventus and a runner's up UEFA Champions League Medal in 2003. In addition, his play and leadership were integral to Italy's winning the World Cup in 2006. Although very tall at 6 feet 4 inches, Buffon has cat-like reflexes, great agility, and incredible hands. His inspired play seems to instill a sense of calm and confidence over his defensive partners.

Right Back

Lilian Thuram (France, Juventus)

Through classy defending that combined athleticism, physicality, positioning, and technique, Thuram excelled in both central defense and wide right for club and country. After a wonderful performance for Les Bleus at World Cup 1998, Thuram played an integral part in France's European Championship 2000 team and World Cup runner's up team in 2006. Thuram was also a beast for Juventus in the first half of the decade as they lifted two Serie A titles.

Central Defense

Rio Ferdinand (England, Manchester United)

A very steady defender who has never disappointed for club or country at the highest stage, Rio starts in central defense for the World Team. Ferdinand combines great size at 6 feet 4 inches and athleticism with excellent composure on the ball. With Manchester United, Ferdinand has won 4 Premier League titles and 1 UEFA Champions League title over the decade. At World Cup 2002 and 2006, Ferdinand put in outstanding performances as England reached the quarterfinals of both tournaments.

Central Defense, Captain

Paolo Maldini (Italy, A.C. Milan)

Maldini is the choice as captain of this squad and starter at central defense. A giant at A.C. Milan, he helped them lift the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2003, 2007, and a runner's up medal in 2005. Although Maldini retired from the Italian national team in 2002, he led them a few minutes away from winning EURO 2000 and to the second round of the 2002 World Cup. Maldini was selected UEFA Champions League defender of the year in 2007 at the age of 38. Maldini brings wonderful, natural defensive abilities and an amazing presence to every defense that he has anchored. He may be the best defender of all time.

Left Back

Roberto Carlos (Brazil, Real Madrid

An explosive player with great pace, powerful free kicks, and tenacious defending, Roberto Carlos mans the left back spot for the World Team of the Decade. A mainstay starter for Brazil and Real Madrid, he won one World Cup trophy, one Champions league trophy, and three La Liga titles over the course of the decade. Roberto Carlos showed excellent consistency by starting over 30 league games for Real Madrid in 10 straight years.

Right Midfield, Deep

Steven Gerrard (England, Liverpool)

Gerrard's never-ending motor, penetrating runs, and powerful shot will run the deep lying right midfield position for the Decade Team. A legend at Liverpool and stalwart in midfield for England's national team, Gerrard won two FA Cup trophies, one UEFA Cup, and one Champions League trophy during the decade. His incredible performance in the 2005 UEFA Champions League final against A.C. Milan showed his true grit and influence on a team as he led Liverpool back from a 3-0 deficit to win in extra time.

Left Midfield, Deep

Patrick Vieira (France, Arsenal, Juventus)

Vieira was a monster in the middle of the field for Arsenal and France throughout the decade. An incredibly powerful player who could break up opposition attacks and make foraging runs to get involved on offense, Vieira sits next to Gerrard in the deep lying midfield role. Vieira helped France win the European Championship in 2000 and reach the final of the 2006 World Cup. For Arsenal, Vieira captained the squad to Premier League titles in 2002, 2004 and FA Cup titles in 2002, 2003, and 2005.

Attacking Central Midfield

Zindedine Zidane (France, Real Madrid

Three-time FIFA World Player of the Year, Zizou played as if the ball was attached to his foot by a string. His legendary technique, touch, and imagination make Zidane an easy choice in the attacking midfield role. Zidane flourished as maestro of the France national team during the decade and led them to a European Championship in 2000 and a runner's up finish at the 2006 World Cup. Twice the FIFA World Player of the Year in this decade, Zidane led Real Madrid to one La Liga title, one UEFA Champions League title, and one Intercontinental Cup final.

Attacking Midfield

Ronaldhino (Brazil, Barcelona, A.C. Milan)

Although a slightly different player after losing some pace in the latter part of the decade, Ronaldhino is easily one of the most gifted and influential players of the decade and entire generation. As part of a great attacking line-up, he helped Brazil lift the 2002 World Cup trophy and a FIFA Confederations Cup trophy in 2005. With Barcelona, he won two league titles and one UEFA Champions League title. When on form and in full flight, he was simply unstoppable.

Forward

Ronaldo #9 (Brazil, Real Madrid)

Possibly the most talented forward of all time at his peak, Ronaldo had some ups and downs throughout the decade. However, his highs were well worth his inclusion in this squad to include a great run to help Brazil win the 2006 World Cup and Real Madrid win two La Liga titles. Ronaldo is the all-time leading scorer in World Cup play and may add to his total in South Africa during the 2010 World Cup. Ronaldo is an incredibly talented player with great touch, power, explosion, and scoring ability. With no disrespect to Cristiano Ronaldo, younger fans need to watch some clips of Ronaldo #9 in true form to see who the “real” Ronaldo is.

Forward

Thierry Henry (France, Arsenal, Barcelona)

Henry is a player with great pace, creativity, vision, and calmness under pressure that easily makes this first team. He led France to the European Championship in 2000 and a runner's up finish at the 2006 World Cup. With unprecedented success at two major international clubs, Henry starred for both Arsenal and Barcelona over the decade. His teams have won two English Premier League titles, one La Liga title, and one UEFA Champions League trophy over the decade.

Substitutes

Ruud Van Nistelooij (Holland, Manchester United, Real Madrid)

Ruud is an out and out striker that can score. He scored loads of goals over the decade in some of the highest quality of competition. Ruud is a three-time UEFA Champions League top scorer and lead scorer in both the Premier League and La Liga over the decade. In this team, Ruud would be a potential late replacement for Ronaldo.

Lionel Messi (Argentine, Barcelona)

The world's best player in 2009, Messi just misses the cut for the first 11. His role as a super-sub could bring great pace to the team as a replacement for Ronaldhino. Messi may be the quickest player ever with the ball at his feet.

Claude Makelele (France, Real Madrid, Chelsea)

A stalwart in defensive midfield for club and country, Makelele would be a great sub for any of the midfield players in this team. He was the engine of many great Real Madrid and Chelsea sides of this decade.

Cafu (Brazil, Roma, A.C. Milan)

An incredibly consistent and fit player, Cafu had a tremendous overall decade. He mostly played right back but probably could play left back in this side as well. Cafu was on many winning sides this decade to include Roma's Serie A title in 2001, Milan's Champions League in 2007, and the World Cup winning Brazil side of 2002.

Oliver Kahn (Germany, Bayern Munich)

A very consistent and intimidating goalkeeper who could be counted on to make amazing saves every game, Kahn is a capable backup for Buffon. Kahn led Bayern Munich to 6 Bundesliga titles over the decade and one Champions Leage title. In great form during the 2002 World Cup, he led Germany to the runner's up trophy.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal, Manchester United, Real Madrid)

A tricky player with great speed who continued to improve throughout the decade, Cristian Ronaldo could be a replacement anywhere at midfield or forward in this team. He was at the peak of his career in 2008 when he won a UEFA Champions League title and FIFA World Player of the Year with Manchester United.

Pavel Nedved (Czech Republic, Juventus)

Neved had some amazing years with Juventus winning multiple Serie A and Italian Cup trophies over the decade and always was dangerous for his Czech Republic National Team. A fiery wing midfield player with great skill, Nedved could fit in at any position in midfield.

England’s 2018 world cup hopes have suffered a further blow today after governing body FIFA returned the FA’s bid book, complaining that it had been ‘defaced with substantial amounts of childish scribbling’.

The 1,752 page dossier, handed to FIFA president Sepp Blatter by soccer legend David Beckham in Zurich last week, has apparently been covered with a number of immature doodles, including a crude crayon drawing of a stick figure woman with large breasts. ‘The originator obviously has some affection for this figure,’ complained a FIFA spokesman, ‘judging by the number of kisses drawn next to it.’

A number of graphs detailing the seating capacity of England’s major stadiums have been coloured in, while a section highlighting the bid’s eco credentials has simply been overwritten with the word ‘boring’ in large capital letters.

The back cover of the book has been defaced, bearing a large Chad labelled ‘wot no kickbacks?’ The document also includes an arrow-pierced love heart bearing the legend ‘Lord T 4 Mel’, with the ‘Mel’ crossed out and replaced by the words, written in more legible handwriting, ’sneaky bitch’.

World Cup Bid 2018/2022 has been beset with problems from the outset, with several members of the bid team falling out over the exact format of the dossier. ‘Most of us were happy with the layout of the book,’ said one anonymous FA insider, ‘but one high-profile person kept insisting on a pop-up, or at least lift-the-flap, version’.

The English FA has staunchly defended its bid team against accusations of tampering, maintaining that none of the books were taken out of their packaging during the flight to Zurich. Meanwhile, newly installed FA bid leader Geoff Thompson is said to be grilling the chief executive of Jacobprint, the company responsible for printing the document; and was last seen taking the 37-year-old privately educated economics and biology graduate out to lunch at RusOlé!, the trendy restaurant that she part-owns with a Spanish-Russian business associate.
